Paper Flowers?

T2018, on October 16, 2017 at 10:04 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 4

I want to do a paper flower back drop for photos at the reception. Can anyone recommend a good template? Also has anyone done one before? I want to make sure they're secure enough so that they aren't falling all over people. Advice welcome!

Google "Avanti Morocha" if you haven't already...she has some gorgeous Youtube tutorials and templates.

I haven't made any myself but all the ones I have seen look gorgeous. Good luck!

Check out you tube. You can also google large paper flowers and some templates should come up. Most sites charged for templates, so I made my own templates after watching some you tube videos. We ended up with about six or seven different style flowers. Honestly, I would recommend making tissue flowers instead of paper flowers. They are faster and easier to make, plus they don't weigh as much, so are easier to hang as a backdrop (without worrying about stuff falling on people).

I used hot glue to glue the flowers to foam board (we had 12 30inx20in boards). Some flowers had to be reglued when we put up the backdrop at the venue. I would recommend making sure the base of each flower is flat - it will hold better with glue. Or you can use ties and fabric (like a shower curtain) or ties and foam board, but it's a lot more work and time.

We drilled holes in the sides of the foam boards and used zip ties and gaff tape to hold them together. If we could have set up the backdrop earlier than 1:30p on the day of, I would have used a single board. We also didn't have enough room for a backdrop frame (which would have been much easier), so we had to attach the backdrop to the side of the venue (outside reception at a private house). The venue owners allowed us to put hooks in their roof line to hang the backdrop.

The pic below is a little dark bc H drunkenly adjusted the flash down for some reason when the sun went down. He realized after the fact that it was a mistake. Oops. We loved our DIY photo booth. Our friends and family had fun with it, and we got tons of compliments on the backdrop. Now I just have to figure out what to do with all the flowers. I can't bring myself to throw them away.

ETA - forgot to mention paper weight. I found that 65lb worked really well for petals and centers, and 110lb worked best for the flower base. I also used 110lb for some petals and centers, and it worked okay for that as well. 65lb paper did NOT work well as a base. I got all my paper at Michaels.

Thanks Deanna!! It was a lot of work, but so worth it. I ran out of time, which is why there is some white space.
