This is such a dumb dilemma, but I'm still having hard time deciding.

Our venue offers heavy duty paper plates and styrofoam cups for free. They also offer china to rent, which is roughly $3 extra per person (dinner plate, glass, silverware only), plus a $100 fee for dish washing. We are having between 120-150 people (no set number right now due to my indecisiveness), so that's $460-$550 extra for china.

If the wedding was outside, I'd go with the paper. But, the wedding is inside a fire hall (I'm so Western PA, it hurts...).

And we're trying for a cheap wedding. But I don't want a wedding I regret.

Rational ersatzpnk is saying go with paper. Vain ersatzpnk says go with china. What would you do?

Purchasing and donating is a good idea. There's a thrift store near me where all profits go to battered women, so I kind of like the idea of helping someone out with our wedding. Hmm. Food for thought (pun slightly intended).

I would absolutely go for china because 120-150 sets of large paper plates, small paper plates, plastic flatware and styrofoam cups is just too destructive to the environment for me.

Ask the venue if their $3/per person charge includes bussing/cleaning - sometimes there's an added fee, especially if the venue rents elsewhere for you when the china and flatware have to be returned rinsed. If they own the china the rental fee is very reasonable, especially if it's decent quality.

I used disposable plastic plates I bought from Costco and the silver looking plastic silverwear. They looked real and no one cared that they were not eating off of china. No one will ever remember the plates you used at your wedding. I vote save the money for something that is more meaningful to you.

I was asked by somneone, "Who's the last wedding you attended?" I answered and the a questioned followed by, "Do you remember what type of plates you ate from?" I said, "No." They said, ok then there is your answer. lol

I say do what fits your budget. If people are there to focus on what kind of plateware and silverware you would be choosing then they are not there for the right reasons anyways. As long as the food taste good I really wouldnt give a damn what you selected for me to eat from. Food is so expensive especailly when you say wedding, from a guest point of view if you have food, and lots of great food, Im greatful and happy at that point.
