Parents info on marriage license???

Monica, on October 4, 2017 at 9:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

Hi everyone!

My fiancé and I are currently in the process of obtaining a marriage license. I was hoping to gain some wisdom from y'all on here...is there a reason why we have to put our parent's information on the application? Do they contact them or is it just for recording the family lineage?

Anything helps! thank you!

They don't contact them. I think it just has to match your birth certificate.

That shouldn't matter, you still list your birth parents.

They don't contact your family. I think it's on there to prove you two aren't related.

It's the same when you get a passport. They are just checking your information to make sure it's you.

The number of times we were asked if we were related was disconcerting.

I think it's for that, to prove who you are, and possibly for census records. So a little bit of everything.

At one point they did a blood test to see if you were to closely related, some places still do lol I'm happy I don't have to do that

    It's just for lineage.

I would check with the clerk. Would also depend I guess on what your birth certificate says. I don't speak to my birth father so for his info I put unknown.

Its just a match for identifying purposes. The only reason I would see them contacting your parents is if you're under age trying to obtain one

Up here they do it so that they can run the background check easier. If it matches all the records on file, you are good to go. It’s to ensure a) everyone is who they say they are; b) everyone is of age of consent; c) there are no impediment to receiving a marriage license.

If we put my father’s name as Tim instead of Timothy will that cause any issues??

What happens if you don't know any of your parent information? My fiancé does not know anything about his mom

I would just ask the clerk -- this is not the first time they have run into this issue. You can probably just put unknown.

The blood test was not to see if you were telated. DNA test did not yet exist when blood tests were required. Blood test had a purpose to screen for STD before exposing a prospective spouse to it.
