Do people actually do this? Have you ladies done this? I don't mean to start a cat fight, but I just learned over the weekend when I was talking to FMIL about the final payments, how to pay, how we are eating cup o noodles the rest of the month (not really, but its definitely a broke college student...

Do people actually do this? Have you ladies done this? I don't mean to start a cat fight, but I just learned over the weekend when I was talking to FMIL about the final payments, how to pay, how we are eating cup o noodles the rest of the month (not really, but its definitely a broke college student month) she disclosed some interesting news. She met with FH best man and his wife the other day, and they have been married for just over a year. They had a smallish (45 people) wedding, ceremony on the beach with the reception at the nearby beach club. She was in school at the time and took out $30,000 to pay for this wedding. This very DIY, simple wedding with no outlandish honeymoon after... She maxed out her student loans to pay for a wedding that they couldn't afford to begin with!! A part of me thought, well some people put weddings on credit cards with 10% interest or more, so 3%-6% isn't that bad, but at the same time, she'll be paying for this wedding for 10 F-ing years...

It actually is smarter than 14% credit card debt... I think it is equally stupid not to put it on a credit card and pay it off immediately. Just paid a $1,000 deposit on photography today, not only is Credit Card easier to dispute if something goes wrong, I get 1% cash back... so now it's a $990 photo deposit thank you very much.

@Janeen -- I'll just hold on to these small C's and an amazing credit rating, thank you very much!

I ended up getting a small private loan my freshman year that was bout ---- 8k? That sent me a check directly. I put it in my savings account, let it build a little bit of money and then paid of the "loan" with the loan money. It was awesome.

I sometimes regret how many student loans I had to take out for my actual education. Because I will be paying them off until my own children are in college.

    So no I don't think it's a good idea.

Yeah a lot of private loans mail the check directly to you and you can do whatever you want with it. I had the federal loans that pay the school directly.

    *hyperventilates*

Yes, schools take what they need then the rest gets disbursed to the student.

Holy hell, that's awful. And not all credit cards have 14% interest. A few credit unions offer them at ridiculously lower rates.

Not that I'm a proponent of credit cards, but let's just say something happens and bankruptcy occurs. School loans/debt will almost never be discharged, unlike consumer debt from cc's.

I hope she's not an economics major! And I'm with you-- $30k does not sound simple. Costco pizza, soda and a sheet cake it simple.

This is too much!! I would never take out a student loan, I am paying my way through school. Let alone take out a student loan for a wedding absolutely not. 30k for a 45 ppl wedding wow! I live in Miami and my 10k wedding is for 105 people and no DIY. This is a horror story. FH and I had run the possibility of a loan through our head if we would ever run into an issue where we won't have enough to finish paying for the wedding God willing we will be fine, we would get a personal loan of like 5k the most. I would never spend 10 years paying off 1 day of my life that is far from worth it. First off your not supposed to get married if you have no financial backup my wedding was planned for a year and a half just in order to save. If your gonna take out a loan get a personal loan for 5k the most but the best thing is to try to have a wedding you can afford.

Does this person not know the student loans follow you until you pay them back or you die? Too my knowledge you cannot discharge them in bankruptcy. This is about the stupidest thing I have heard.

Agree that's a terrible idea. I do see how the Beach wedding cost that much with only 45 guests...

Anyone who thinks a wedding on a beach will be cheap is out of their mind.

And, that girl is dumb for maxing out student loans (which should be used for school) on a 45 person wedding...

Weddings should not cost more than $100/person,and even thats high.

Woow that's pretty low and her 30k wedding is gonna cost her a lot more than that in the end. Why are people so short sighted!

FYI Student loans are only supposed to pay for SCHOOL related costs. It makes that very clear in the application
