Paying for Priest's Accomodations

Conor, on January 8, 2020 at 12:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

Hi all! My fiancee and I are getting married on the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend and I am wondering if it is customary for me to pay for my priest's accommodations. He is the director of the Catholic high school I attended and will be driving 3 hours to where we are getting married. The rehearsal is Friday evening and reception is Sunday. Do I have to pay for 2 or 3 nights in a hotel for him? Also I am assuming we should invite him to the reception, right? Would appreciate any advice you all have on this, thanks!!

If he's having to travel that far, I would think it's pretty standard to pay for your officiant's accommodations. If you want him to be at your rehearsal, you would need to pay for Friday night, Saturday night, and possibly Sunday night (depending on what time your ceremony is).

Yes, it is customary, and an invite to the reception would also be a good thing. Some people also do an extra thank you gift.

2 night Friday and Saturday so he's there for the big day. Aaand yes that's really far not to get offered a meal at the party.

Will the officiant be required to attend the rehearsal? If so, it looks like you would need to offer to cover the 3 nights of accommodation for Friday, Saturday (the actual ceremony) and Sunday (if the reception is going on until late).
Speak with your priest before booking anything. Explain the plan for the weekend if you haven't already and see what suits him best. He may not be available Friday or Sunday.
