Payment methods

Elizabeth, on August 18, 2017 at 10:09 AM Posted in Planning 0 26

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on payment methods--credit card, bank transfer, PayPal, check, etc.

We are paying vendors large sums of money, so what is the best way to pay?--in terms of safety, avoiding fraud, avoiding extra fees, and getting the most out of credit card rewards programs, etc.

Thanks!

We're paying almost all by credit card for cash back. Some have a processing fee, so well pay those by check

We're using a rewards credit card for all purchases and paying it off each month.

All of my vendors only take cash or check including my venue, so I would speak with them to see what their options are for you to pay with.

ETA: my venue will take a CC day of if anything is needed to be charged (longer bar hours, etc..)

I've been paying with credit cards as much as I can (protection, flight miles, etc). My final payment to my photographer and caterer are check only though! I have a 10% Service fee if I pay my DOC with CC so she'll get check too.

We try not to use credit cards whenever possible. Currently we've been paying via debit card and checks. For the large balances left to pay (venue for ex) we will write a check.

3 of our vendors require you pay through their companies paypal account. Others require a check. When we pay through paypal we use our debit cards. We are trying to avoid charging anything to our credit card, although the points on it would be really nice. I'm just trying to avoid charging to much and not paying it off.

I work for a credit card processing company so I absolutely refuse to use any form of payment that requires a "fee" for ME to pay lol. So I will write checks, Paypal. what ever option the vendor has that can be tracked and is Free.

We paid almost everything with checks and always requested evidence that they receive the payments. Only a few things we were able to pay w credit/debit card like the cake and some decoration stuff, but always paid it off right away. Felt nice to be done w the wedding and not have debt!

We are using credit cards for the points and then immediately transferring the same amount from savings to cover to charge. We had one vendor that required a check and another that used Paypal, but I have my miles credit card linked to my paypal and still got the points.

If you have a credit card that gives you any points or cash back, I would use that! My H and I did that and the points we earned paid for our HM flights to Rome! Some vendors charged a cc fee, so those we paid with checks.

BTW only use your credit card if you are able to pay for the amount in full.

You should first look at the contracts, or just ask them what forms of payment do they accept. Our venue took deposits in the form of cash, personal check, credit card, and money orders, but the final balance had to be paid via a certified bank check only.

Only two of our vendors (photo/video) allowed a cc, so I used my Chase Freedom so I could get the 1.5% cash back.

Cash for places that charge a credit card fee, and credit card for everything else for cash back

In terms of safety, CC's are probably the best, plus you get points....but don't carry a balance; pay that amount in full.

In many states, charging you a fee to use a CC is illegal, so I'd look into that too.

I love using my CC for everything because of my 1.5% cash back!

    Depends on the vendor.

Our Venue requires cash or check and we feel the check is safe because of the paper trail.

Other methods we are using include

    - Credit or Debt card for our DJ as he has an online option

    - Venmo for our photographer since neither of us has a paypal account currently and the other option is cash/check through the mail since she works out of her home office, and I don't trust the philly mail one bit.

95% of my vendors have accepted CC so we have used our Chase rewards card and then just paid the card off every time we've charged. It has been great because we were able to pay majority of our honeymoon accommodations using points. Our dinner caterer and venue were the only two vendors that didn't take credit card, we had to write a check for them.

Whatever you do, avoid paying in cash if possible. If not possible then make sure you get a receipt up front. You have a paper trail with check and CC. ETA: added words

I've been paying with checks mostly - most of my vendors only accept check! I would much rather paypal!

We paid vendors with bank checks. We bought wedding items with a cash back credit card and paid it off monthly.

We don't have credits so we pay with checks and debit cards. I don't give vendors permission to save my debit card info, though. I'd never make a large payment in straight cash tough since it doesn't leave any kind of record.
