Pearls and superstitions

Has anyone heard it's bad luck to wear pearls if they aren't your birthstone? My future mother in law told me her mother told her that. What other superstitions have you heard that don't make sense?

It could be a superstition in some cultures, because I remember watching Married At First Sight and the husband gave her a pearl necklace or something right before the wedding and she started freaking out! lol. I could be wrong, but I think she's Puerto Rican. They are still married Smiley tongue

I heard about the pearls superstition on the last Married at First Sight show - but I hadn't heard of it before that.

For what it's worth, I'm Italian American and will be wearing a dress with gold/iridescent beading (despite the whole "bad luck" thing) I also like the look of silver toned wedding jewelry with pearls and clear Swarovski crystals.

I don't care about superstitions... going to wear what I want!

I've heard that it's bad luck to wear pearls on your wedding because they represent tears in Spanish culture (and I met a Guatemalan woman who said the same thing so perhaps there too). It's not bad luck for everyday use though.

I'm wearing my FMIL's wedding pearls (she wore them on her wedding day and has been married 30 years now). My MOH's name is Pearl. Guess I'm doomed.

Some superstitions do have a logical reason behind them.

A pearl engagement ring does not hold up if you have your hands in water a lot. Yes, pearls come from oysters (in the water), but dish water, etc., will wear away the nacre. My mom had a pearl engagement ring and that happened to it. With 5 kids under the age of 7, her hands were in water a LOT!

Opals are not recommended for rings because they can shatter easily. I have opal earrings & pendant that are fine because they don't take the abuse a ring does.

But, I wore my g'ma's pearl earrings at my wedding almost 30 years -- still happily married!

I have never heard of this.

However I hate pearls and will be siting this as a reason to not wear my mother's (she's offered/forced these many times) for my wedding.

Thanks for the bogus superstition to add to my "I'm not wearing your pearls" arsenal!

I think that's opals you're thinking of. I've heard those are bad luck if not your birthstone!

I've heard the pearls/tears one and that it's bad luck - I remember my mother telling my that her mother used to say this to her all the time. More recently, my mother clarified that my grandmother had told her that pearls are only bad luck if you buy them for yourself, but that if they're borrowed or gifted to you, they're perfectly fine.

Personally, I'm a believe what you want kind of girl.

Where I’m from there’s a saying - pearls are born from suffering and suffering they bring.
And it’s pure logic, when you think about where do pearls come from or how they are made. I would never wear them on my wedding day, nor any day.

Hi! I know my comment is years behind. But I just wanna share what my country believes about Pearls. I'm from the Philippines btw. Our country is know in Asia as "PEARL OF THE EAST". Wild pearls is prominent within various regions in my country. Filipino's and also Chinese believes that MAIDENS SHOULD NOT WEAR PEARLS coz it will block the flow of love in your life. Pearl is seen in our country as a sign of MATURITY AND ELEGANCE that only married women should wear. Even in old times, married Filipino aristocrats wear them as a sign of their social status. It is believe that when an UNMARRIED GIRL WORE PEARLS AND IT IS NOT HER BIRTHSTONE she will end up as an old maiden. Even in weddings, a girl cannot wear a pearl on or before the event if she wanted her wedding to be pushed through. Btw, this is only applicable to REAL PEARLS, ESPECIALLY WILD PEARLS. FAKE PEARLS OR IMMITATIONS WON'T HAVE THE SAME EFFECT. I hope this helps. :-)

I am a few year behind also! I’m also Filipino. For what it’s worth, the reason I was told that pearls for the wedding is bad luck is because they are representative of tears and pain. Pearls are created by introducing an irritant (like a grain of sand) into an oyster. The oyster cannot expel the irritant and so they are in pain. The pearl is created because the oyster makes a layer around the irritant to try and relieve the pain. Thus, the pearl is the tears of the oyster.
