Peonies, Hydrangeas, and Carnations! OH MY!

Maci, on July 2, 2012 at 1:07 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 16

So I plan on buying my flowers from a wholesaler and doing them myself. I will be having anywhere from 12 - 18 tables. I can't decided on what flowers I want to use or how I am going to do my center pieces.

I have two different ideas:

1) simple mason jars w/flower

2) taller vase w/flowers and 3 small round bowl w/candles and grape vine in them

Here are 3 three "vase" options

I like the middle one the best Maci! It is a bit more versatile than the other flowers and because of its design could probably be easier to put flowers in.

Thanks Carole! Any thoughts on what flower?

I love all 3 I'm just not sure which one I'd get more for my money.

Is the mouth of the vase the same size on #2 and #3?

To save money, I would do the vase with the smaller opening.

I think 2 or 3 hydrangeas plus some carnations to add some pop of color would be nice. Aren't peonies and hydrangeas super expensive???? When I read "DIY" I read into it that you are on a budget.

Hayley: Peonies and hydrangeas are more expensive than carnations and we are on a budget but with the money I'm saving in other areas I am considering the hydrangeas and peonies as an option.

Check the price of garden roses. They are big like a peony but cost less. And peonies are sometimes out of season.

We used garden roses - it's the flower in my avatar. Here's a photo of my bouquet - they totally look like peonies.

My personal taste is, if you're doing something fluffy like hydrangea or garden roses, a lower vase looks really beautiful to cluster them. Our centerpieces were taller and they were pretty, but I might make them a little lower if I did it over again (I didn't DIY.)

Also if you really cluster the same color of carnations and carnations only in a very tight cluster, it has that similar fluffy look IMO.

Here are the arrangements our florist did for the reception - centerpiece and then lower arrangements for the dessert/gift/placecard tables. They're both really pretty IMO but like I said if I were to redo, I'd go with the smaller/cheaper ones everywhere, I think with the volume of those flowers it made plenty of impact!

Why choose? Your centerpieces would look great w/a mix of all the different flowers. Smiley smile I'm using meason jars w/a mix of carnations, daisys, hydreangeas and other wild flowers Smiley smile

Sara D: I'd love to use all but since I am doing them myself it might get pretty pricey.

100 stems of peonies will cost me $399

    150 stems of carnations $63.56

    104 stems of hydrangeas $339

I am kind of doing my own flowers. I don't know what site you are using. I found this whole sale site called 2G Roses. They ship them to you. They have all different types of flowers. It tells you what flowers are good for each month. They sell them in smaller bunches also. Check it out it may help you decide which flowers. You may be able to get all three. I hope I was helpful!

Ooooh Hayley, I love the Garden Roses! Im also a fan of Peonies and the Garden Roses are a nice compromise. I even like the cluster look of what they call "cabbage roses"?

I say go with the carnations - I love carnations! They are colorful, romantic and smell heavenly. Not only that but they last and last so you can make the centerpieces ahead of time and not worry about wilting or drooping!

Oh, and I also think you could mix the vases with alternating tables having tall and others having short.

As for the vases, i like the mason jar, but that is only if you are having a fairly casual wedding, like a country or garden theme. I like them because they are lower and allow people to be able to talk across the table to each other. hydrangeas give you a lot of bang for your buck and mixing them with other flowers can give you a really neat look.

Sara D-I like the idea of using wildflowers too. My mom has a wildflower garden, and we were actually talking about using her garden to fill out vases and to make my bouquet.
