People Who Marry Inanimate Objects

The Bride, on July 28, 2019 at 11:03 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 20

I've read a few articles about people marrying inanimate objects such as the Berlin Wall, a Barbie doll, or even a picture of themselves. Some call it a fetish while others argue that it's just as normal as marrying another human.

What are your thoughts on people marrying inanimate objects?

I've never seen anyone consider it as normal as marrying a person.
In some cases it may be a fetish if the motivation is sexual, it may be obsession with the object if the motivation isn't sexual.
I don't think you can marry something that is inanimate, in my opinion marriage is a choice made by adult and consenting people. An object doesn't have the ability to be an adult or consenting.

An inanimate object cannot reciprocate love. Marriage is a union between 2 people who love each other. I don't know that I would call it a fetish or what but it's just weird.

I agree that is the union of two consenting adults and therefore you cannot marry an inanimate object.

No. Just no. It isn't even legal. An object isn't even capable of emotional feelings let alone love. The people described have physiological problems where they are abnormally drawn to objects. It is a fixation not necessarily a fettish.

My understanding is that it is not legally binding but you can have a marriage ceremony with animals and inanimate objects.

Which specific examples are you referring to where the people have physiological problems?

Why do you say it is a fixation?

Well in general terms of fetish there is a sexual desire or drive. It would on most of the type of object, not just one. Some people have a foot fetish. They like feet in general not just one set of feet. It would be a fetish I guess if they felt the object had a soul or spirit inside.
Fixation in psychological terms is an unhealthy obsession with a certain person, place, or thing. Think stalkers.

I think it's just all around weird. I think I've seen something on someone either dating or marrying a train.....A T-R-A-I-N. TRAIN!!!!! There was something else on some show I was watching and it was about a guy's family that left him cause he like married his pig or something but was GENUINELY in love with it.

And that's the argument of supporters, that these people genuinely are in love with these objects. They feel that if it really loves then it should be honored. I find it interesting.

I think I saw an episode of My Strange Addiction where a woman “married” a train station. I see it as a sign of mental illness, maybe not full fledged insanity but something they need to work on. Maybe it’s just a fear of being alone and an odd choice to combat that fear.

Can't get on board with this at all. It takes two consenting adults to get married period. One in love a marriage does not make. Imagine having a ceremony with a comatose patient. Sure one loves and wants to marry the patient but the patient is not willing or able to agree to the marriage. Should we honor that marriage?

I've got to echo PPs. It's pretty hard to consider yourself married in a one-sided relationship

I'm not saying I agree, that's just some of the information out there about this topic.

I agree that people who marry inanimate objects may just be lonely.

Marriage doesn't necessarily require you to be an adult, does it? What about child marriages? And I don't think you have to consent either, I've been doing some reading on arranged marriages and most of those are not consensual.

I'm not sure I could answer your question. Based on the information I've been presented with I'd say no. But I believe that type of marriage is okay in certain cultures. I can't say for sure.
