Performance at your wedding?

JPCD, on August 8, 2017 at 9:36 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 12

Hi all!

I'm curious to see how many (if any) of you are having some sort of performance at your wedding. Not necessarily live bands, but dancers or performers?

Hora Loca? Cultural dancers? I am interested in having a Colombian folkloric dance (Cumbia) in full garb, to showcase my culture. Have any of you been to a wedding that has done this? What are your thoughts?

If I were to do it, it would just be for a song or two. Nothing too extended.

Thanks everyone !

Out of 2-dozen weddings I've attended, I've never seen a performer at a reception. We paid for a 12-piece band, for 4.5 hours. I don't think our budget could have covered a dance troupe, for one or two songs.

@dreamer, ya I haven't done enough research to see how much it will cost to have a few dancers for about an hour.

I also don't see it being an easy feat, but I think it would be pretty cool.

I've also never seen a performer at a wedding either, but I don't see any reason why you can't if it's important to you and part of your culture!

If it's a cultural thing, I think it's an awesome idea! I'm not familiar with Cumbia at all, but I'd be really excited as a guest to see it!

Not a fan of when the bride/groom/someone else turns the wedding into a time to have a captive audience though, which is where I totally thought this post was going by your title!

If I was a guest at your wedding and saw a few performances of live Cumbia from a reasonably talented group- I would die happy and talk about the greatness of your wedding for the rest of my life. But also beware of budget! But if that isn't an issue, I saw go for it!

I had "a" bellydancer- I say "a" because it's my friend- who is a professional performer- but it's very traditional for some Arabic regions to have a dancer- so I hired my friend- I certainly wasn't going to be dancing.

I'm Colombian and I've seen it done in a few weddings in South Florida. It's actually pretty cool. If I had the budget I would do it!

Hi. I'm from Colombia also and I would love to have a performer @ my wedding to show my culture/background to my guests. I would hace two songs and then continue with "la hora loca" using the performers to engage everybody. We are having a vallenato group (colombian music) the last hour of the reception

Thank you everyone! Oh we will definitely NOT be performing. I'm looking for professionals. I'm hoping that because I'm near NYC, I can find some professional dancers.

My plan is also to have them dance to 1-2 songs and get everyone else dancing as well.

That vallenato group sounds amazing though!!! @AC

I attended a wedding where there were Brazilian dancers, but their budget was unlimited. My wedding didn't have any form of entertainment like that, but I was informed it was one of the most fun some had ever attended. All you need is a really good DJ and you're set in my opinion lol.

Yea I clearly haven't thought about budget lol if it's too pricey we won't go with it. Our DJ is bilingual and will definitely be playing music from both of our cultures.

I'm doing a steel drum player for the ceremony and cocktail hour and potentially dinner. He switches to DJ after.
