Period on Wedding Weekend – roll with it?

Brittani, on May 9, 2015 at 1:43 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 31

I am a month out from my wedding day and it's clear that the 2 heaviest days of my period will fall on my rehearsal (swimming, river float) and on the wedding day. All I see in these forms are stories about how to move or stop your period. I definitely won't be moving mine, my hormones are super sensitive to messing with my birth control.

Can anyone share stories of actually having their period on their wedding (not trying to stop it)? I'd love to know – was it really so bad? Were you so caught up it didn't really matter? Was it a giant pain?

That's kind of my biggest fear. I will be definitely altering it if it comes close (and I just checked - I should miss it naturally!) Good luck! My best friend had her period on her wedding day and she said she still had a great time. She was a virgin though so she and her new husband were pretty bummed out; they avoided sex for their entire honeymoon. She definitely didn't think it was that big of a deal on the wedding day though.

Following this post, I'm so scared that I'll be on my period on the day. I'm the biggest bitch ever while on my period.

For the girls that are further out, I recommend figuring it out now. Luckily I've been on BC for years so it was easy for me to chart it out now and realize that it is going to fall on my wedding day. I'm on a tri-phasic pill, though, which means you can't skip a period on it. I have my well-woman next month, so my doctor already knows we're going to discuss finding the most similar monophasic pill possible. That way I can bump it to starting on 2/7 if I skip one period this summer, and won't have to worry about breakthrough bleeding because I'm not skipping it the week of my wedding, it'll already be moved.

I am in the process of changing mine as naturally I would be starting the day after my wedding...so far I am successful at changing it.

I literally charted my period out a year and then listed which weekends/weeks I WOULDN'T have it and then picked and planned my wedding around those dates. But to your question...I've had to deal with that issue for other very important events and it wasn't that big of a deal. If you can do what FutureMrsDrF is doing and find a way to skip it, that's best.

SOFTCUPS!!! Go buy them now! If you're going to have your period they are amazing. You have to put it inside of you, but its 12 hour period protection (I only go 6 hours on my crazy heavy days). So you do not have to worry about missing any of the fun, or changing things in your dress! You can even have "less messy" sex, if you're comfortable. It looks like the birth control ring but with a bag attached to it. I was someone who would change everything every hour and still ruin a pair of pants each month, I have no issues with softcups. It does take making sure it's in correctly - think up and back and push as far as it goes. You won't even feel it in and cramps are about half of wearing tampons! Hopefully it won't be an issue at all for you, but if there's any chance grab Softcups at any Walgreens/CVS.

I charted out mine as well and then a couple of months ago my period shifted. It looks like Miss Flo will be coming the day before my wedding (unless God has mercy). I was looking for things to postpone/speed-up/you name it. I finally decided to just go with it....I don't want to mess with my body or do anything drastic. Our wedding night will be my first time, so I'm already nervous as it is, but my FH said 1) he's ok with it, 2) it's still happening...he hasn't waited this long for nothing. Haha. I might try the softcups suggestion. I've heard good things about those.

As far as the swimming and river float, you can definitely do them with tampons or the Softcup.

On the wedding day, you really have two issues: making it through the day without an accident, and having sex. Making it through the day is definitely the more challenging of the two. You may want to consider something like the Softcup so that you won't have to worry about changing a tampon as often. You may want to practice with it ahead of time, so you aren't struggling to figure it out while stressed out. And of course, if your flow is really heavy, you can wear a pad as well just to be on the safe side.

Sex during your period is not that big a deal. For you, it can help ease cramps. And if you've been wearing a tampon or Softcup during the day, sex after it's taken out is typically not messy. The blood would take some time to get out anyway. And if you're lying down, and he's plugging up the exit, the time taken is even more. Thus, the blood doesn't typically get out and make a mess. But if you're really worried, you can put a towel under you for even more protection.

My sister had hers on the day of and actually felt safer with it then than on any other day. She wore a tampon, light pad, and then spanx was her control garment. Really held things in and she had no worries of leaks or shifting. The worst part was changing it at bathroom time and for her piece of mind she actually took her dress off completely for bathroom breaks to fend off possible mess.

I've used Soft Cups and wouldn't recommend them unless you're a pro. Even after using them for 6 months i had terrible leaking. If you can get into Diva Cup I'd recommend those! Also, Target and Christmas Tree Shops(random I know) sell ultra absorbent tampons that really last.

After 3 years of using BC to prevent me from getting my period, the idea of having a period feels like a human rights violation. I could never go back!

I am not on BC, and it's possible that my period will be starting the wedding or honeymoon. Eh, what can you do. If it's there it's there. I plan to just roll with it, make sure you're covered with supplies and make sure you hit the bathroom often (just in case). Have someone remind you if you need too.

and for the honeymoon, showers are there.. no biggie.

Mine should start any day now! I'm glad it didnt fall next week for the wedding. I know I'll already be a emotional mess and that would only add to the problem.

I took my pink pills straight through, skipped the sugar pills and skipped my period for the month. Worked like a charm... then went back to normal the next month.

Pharmacist bride over here, and I have been altering my monophasic BC for years to get 4 periods/ year and adjusting for vacations and such. If your on mono BC def just start a new pack and skip placebo(period) pills you will be fine. if you are if not I'm not much help! Congrats and good luck!

So I have horrible periods. Crazy heavy. I recently started using something called a Diva Cup and it has literally changed my life. I used to have to go to the bathroom to change pads/tamping literally every 2 hours. This j just change twice every 24 hours. I do a cleaning in the morning before I go to work, and at night before I go to bed. It's good for long periods of time and through lots of activity/movement. If you don't want to alter your period with hormones, I suggest looking at this option because it's long lasting.

Unfortunately my wedding day is today and it's here. With mirena you never know. I'm having cramps, but I'm very light. I'm so excited about today I'm not even worried about it. But piss at the same time because it's my wedding night. Hoping it's gone by today.

I went off BC about five years ago, and have just always felt so much better off of it, but actually considering going back on just for this purpose.. I shouldn't be on my period naturally the day of, but if you notice it is two years away so who knows! Lol I like the idea of the cups, never heard of that before.. Does anyone know if they sell them in Canada?

As for sex.... Shower is your best friend. My FI and I have had sex in the shower everytime and it's never a a messy issue.

I will be on the last few days of my cycle for my wedding. I'm actually not mad because that means I'll be ovulating on the honeymoon! Haha. I'm usually really heavy the first three days and anything after I can handle. I just plan on wearing tampons and a light pad. I will take the whole dress off if I am heavy and need to change anything.

Thanks for all of your replies! I already use a Diva cup (seriously changed my life as I'm a dancer and always super active on my period) and will look into the Soft Cups as an alternative, I still have one more cycle to test that out before the wedding.

I'm not as concerned about the bleeding – mostly the crabby, kinda sweaty feeling that accompanies it and since my dress fits snugly across the chest, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my breasts won't swell too much. I guess I might just be a little more voluptuous than planned!

My partner and I have have been together for 7 years and have no problem having sex anytime of my cycle, but I do feel much sexier and less plan-minded when we don't need to lay a towel or get in the shower. Ah well. Seriously, thanks for your responses. Sometimes it's just nice to hear that others are going through/stressing about the same things.

Slightly off-topic but I have tried other menstrual cups and I've found Femmecycle to be a winner. Look them up. My cycles are extremely heavy and can still wear it throughout the day without problems. Very different design than other cups.
