Personal Touches in Your Wedding!

Kathryn, on April 6, 2016 at 10:26 AM Posted in Planning 0 24

FH and I are past the big plans (vendors, food, dj, etc.) and are on to the details of planning. I want to have cute little details that make the wedding more "us", but I'm struggling to not make my wedding look like a Pinterest board threw up everywhere!

What details did you ladies add to make your wedding more "you"? Any suggestions? FH and I LOVE movies, reading, FH loves Space (aerospace engineer) and I'm a high school English teacher. Maybe we're just not interesting enough for cute, fun details! (Kidding...kind of!)

You could incorporate these details into your centerpiece or DIY paper flowers for your bouquet. Instead of table numbers you could do your favourite books turned into movies?

We had a Georgia Tech cake topper (both alums), Star Wars tie clips (both big nerds and went to see the movie after the reception), and I had a Minions garter (our first date was to see Despicable Me).

    Small touches, keep it subtle.

If you have programs or thank you tags or anything written, you could incoporate them there!

A couple things we are doing: on the back of the programs we are going to put details about the wedding that everyone there won't know, like how the flower girl and my great grandmothers were sisters, or the reason we chose certain readings. We also are incorporating our hometowns into it (NJ/Philly) by making the tables labeled our favorite restaurants in our areas. Also, the groomsmen have two things in common: their love of drinking and their love of Philly sports teams, so they will be wearing different philly team's socks. We just bought them, they are cute! (is cute the word?). So maybe you could incorporate his love of space into something he is wearing, or have quotes from your favorite books on programs or tags, or even your favorite books as the table numbers. I also love a cute cake topper that is unique!

We are having a Jack and Sally cake topper and personalized flukes. I will have a Hello Kitty charm on my bouquet and garter. Just subtle hints mostly. But our theme is the beach, which we both love.

I am a high school English teacher and FH's hobby is raising bees. Check out our centerpieces...vintage books, paper flowers made of book pages, and the vase is a honey jar.

ETA: because I choose not to be an English teacher before 8:00AM

Oh- and we are having a honey bar...FH has jarred 5 varieties of honey, so we will put some out with crackers and pears for people to sample the differences in flavor and color.

You know, we're not really incorporating our favorite anythings into our wedding. We love video games and geeky stuff, huge hockey fans, I'm an Alice in Wonderland and book collecting addict etc. but we chose not to include those items in our wedding. We didn't want a hodge-podge of unconnected things, so I guess you could say we're going generic in our wedding. We love all the items we've found to include but there's no theme.

That's not to say that I think doing it is tacky---but it just wasn't for us, so don't feel bad if you don't include your love of books or his love of space into the wedding. You certainly can, but you don't HAVE to Smiley smile

I love Disney so I painted a "hidden Mickey" onto our aisle runner. The other "touch" was unconventional. DH and I have a "dry" sense of humor (somewhat sarcastic and not everyone gets "it"). I wanted to play on the whole idea that the man is somehow "trapped" or now dealing with the "ball and chain" and my initial thought was to have DH enter shackled but DH wanted to keep things more serious. The compromise was that he would walk down the aisle (after the moms' entrance but before any of the bridal party) to the "Jaws" theme and having the music change to "Another One Bites the Dust" (just the beginning music) halfway through his walk. From the video I saw (a family member recorded it) guests thought it was funny (but that it was DH's idea; nope it was my idea and such a fun surprise for our guests. Plus it was so us). Here is a picture of me discussing it with one of our guests (in the receiving line).

We had books for centerpieces, flowers in vases and teacups that I collected from antique stores, knick knacks, lace doilies, and our oil lamp collection. Our cake had a VW outline on the second tier. We had our VW wedding quilt hanging. If our buses hadn't both decided that it was time for an engine overhaul one week before the wedding, they would have been their as well. We also had several gnomes floating around the wedding (another thing I collect). Honestly, most of my centerpieces either came from a past time I enjoy (antiquing/thrifting) or from around our home.

FH and I are ridiculously silly dancers. We will have bride and groom air puppets at our entrance which no one knows about. Our centerpieces consists of wine and Sudoku puzzles. The 'winner' at each table gets to take the bottle of wine home. FH and I choreographed a first dance (we're actually mostly recreating the Thinking Out Loud video), but that may be problematic now since I found out FMIL really wants me to do our first dance in my wedding dress.

So many good suggestions! Thanks ladies Smiley smile

@AMW that's true, and I definitely don't feel like I have to include that stuff (I do not need an outer space themed wedding, haha. Space terrifies me.) It's more like I'm trying to think of creative table numbers and other creative things that make it feel like less of a "cookie-cutter" wedding. Just little details that guests will remember!! It's a lot harder than I thought it would be, because I'm generally a more creative person!! I'm extra struggling though.

I'm a wino and FH is big into whiskey so we are setting up a "whiskey lounge" with some rented vintage furniture (think leather pub chairs, lots of brass etc). We also are big into I guess indie/acoustic/singer-songwriter type music. So we have a musician coming to play acoustic guitar for the ceremony and cocktail hour. I'm reeeealllly excited about that part. I thought that would be something way out of our budget. But we stumbled upon him (literally) playing in a bar on NYE. He's only charging us $300 to play!

I am a HUGE baseball fan, so I have some elements added for me (baseball roses in my bouquet, my ring will be carried in tied to a baseball, the tables ate named after field positions, & place cards will look like game tickets). FH couldn't decide on anything he wanted, but I am doing him a Panthers cake for the RD and got him Panthers cufflinks as a surprise.

Having a small, low-key wedding is what reflects our personalities. We are not at all for pomp and circumstance. Food and drink will be the star of the show. FH and I love sangria and each have our special mix. His is red, mine white so those will be our featured drinks for the evening. We also considered whiskey tasting.

ETA: I LOVE Shan's whiskey lounge idea!!!
