Personal vows and "repeat after me"

Aria, on June 16, 2018 at 3:24 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 22

So FH's father is officiating the ceremony which means that we get to write our own ceremony! We want to have the time to say some personal vows, but also the "repeat after me" kind while we exchange rings. Is that normal or do most people do one or the other? I'm worried that if we drop one, it will make our ceremony too short!

We're actually doing both, personal vows and the regular ones.

I plan on doing both! I love the tradition of the regular vows but we also want to say what’s on our heart so we’re doing both!

We are doing both. But if you get nervous like me make sure they break up the repeating vows. I didn't remember everything he said at the rehearsal and I ended up saying "I promise my hole".

Thanks for the post. I have been contemplating on this. My question is, do you say the personal ones right after the "say it after me" vow?

At the moment, we have it set up in this order:
    Welcoming prayer
    Personal vows
    Reading by my mother
Exchange of rings (repeat after me vows)
    Unity candle
    Closing Prayer

We're doing both. I haven't decided the order yet, but we're leaning towards doing the personal vows first and doing the exchange of rings with the "repeat after me" vows to seal the deal

We are doing repeat after me style with our personal vows! We are writing out our long vows and then shortening them for the ceremony to do repeat after me style. My FH gets nervous in front of crowds if he knows he has to say something- so this takes the pressure off and he can enjoy the day and not stress! We are just writing 5 or 6 simple lines summerizing our full vows that we will probably exchange that night.

Wow...I am so glad you posted this. Just told my FH last night
... it's either one or the other... because he wanted to do both. Sooo glad to know it's possible. Thanks!!💖

I’m so glad to see all of these responses! We are meeting with our officiant in a few weeks to discuss in more detail the ceremony layout and I really wanted to do personal vows as well as the traditional repeat after me vows but I wasn’t sure if it was odd or totally extra. 😂 This totally makes me feel better!!

We didn’t write our own vows, but we did have 2 parts as you describe. We had the vows we said “we do” and “we will” together to, and then we had the exchange of rings where we repeated a short phrase about the meaning of the ring.

What a sigh of relief with the responses. FH has been having panic attacks about remembering traditional vows as opposed to reading personal vows. I wasn't sure if it was "out of order" to skip traditional vows. We will have the I Do's and some of the other traditional parts but we agreed on primarily using our own which FH is relieved about.

Don’t worry about memorizing them! I don’t think I’ve ever been a wedding where they memorized their vows. Personals can be read from a piece of paper, traditional are repeated piece by piece after the officiant!

Thanks Ann for the advice! He is so relieved to do his own because of the intimacy associated with vows. We recently went to a wedding and the bride was so nervous she couldn't even speak after the officiant. He told her to relax and take a breath. She ended up saying her own and it was so sweet.

My close family friend (second mom to me) is a pastor and is doing our wedding. We are going to customize the repeat after me vows. It will be personal without fh and I having to memorize or read off a paper.

Well we wrote our own vows but the officiant did it repeat after me style. It worked because we could look in each other’s eyes while saying it.
