Personal vows and "repeat after me"

So FH's father is officiating the ceremony which means that we get to write our own ceremony! We want to have the time to say some personal vows, but also the "repeat after me" kind while we exchange rings. Is that normal or do most people do one or the other? I'm worried that if we drop one, it will make our ceremony too short!

    After reading all the responses I think we are going to do both. I never knew it was so much that you go through with wedding planning and I'm loving it, its exciting getting other brides to be opinions and experience.

    So glad I ran across this post because I was just thinking of this! I love that we're doing our personal vows but I think there's something about the ritual of the "repeat after me" vows. I'm big on mixing tradition with modernity and am glad I'm not alone in wanting to do both!
