Pet Shout-outs in Ceremony?

DJ, on May 4, 2016 at 3:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

Has anyone ever talked about the furbabies during their ceremony? I really wanted to bring my dogs to our destination wedding in Sedona and even had a plan in place to do it, but FH convinced me it would be too much stress. As a compromise, we're going to work them into the ceremony. Our officiant just sent a first draft which talks a bit about our furbabies and then goes into a reading that 'comes from them'. Is that too much? I honestly think it's cute, but wanted to get an opinion since I've never heard anyone mention their pets in a ceremony before. (Although thinking about it, the last few weddings I've attended, the couples didn't have pets...)

Hmm, I don't think so. We included a pic of our dog in the seating chart. You could also include him in the cake topper?

I definitely considered this... but have ultimately decided against it. I am going to try and get a cake topper that includes my dog. I love love love my dog, but I think my guests may find it too weird if I mention the dog during the ceremony.

A reading from your furbabies might be a bit much Smiley smile Are you writing your own vows? That could be a great place to add in a furbaby shout out ("and I promise to always take the dogs out at night, even if it's raining" Smiley smile or something like that!). Or if your officiant is doing a homily they can add in a cute line about the pups!

They are in our cake topper. We just wanted to acknowledge them somehow during the ceremony, but I guess it seems weird?

ETA: WWLynnie, that's a good idea about putting them in the vows.

Yeah this seems odd. I'm not a pet person so I don't know a lot about it but I wouldn't include a "reading" from them. I think a cake topper with them included would be very cute!

ETA: I didn't see your update before I posted.

I have mentioned the names of pets (present or at home) upon request by the couples. I have not done a reading "from them."

The closest thing I've seen was a couple that worked something into their vows. I forget the exact wording, but it was something about how their life together will be full of love, and laughter, and kitty fur, etc.

As a person without pets (at the moment, love pets, probably will have them later in life), I would think this was a bit odd if I were attending your wedding. Incorporating into your vows seems like a better option, and as a guest, I wouldn't think it was as odd.

That's a bit much to me... but then again I did mention our VW buses in my vow to him...

"I promise to love you unconditionally, to always be supportive of your goals and dreams, and to work on our relationship like you work on the VW buses--consistently, lovingly, and with great patience."

I agree with @Grumpy. if you wrote your own vows and said something like "I promise to always get up early on Saturdays to feed the dogs" that is cute and funny, but honestly anything more than that is a littttttle weird. you're marrying the man of your dreams, not the dog of your dreams.

ETA - VWCat that is precious, and something you two are truly passionate about. it fit the theme too. I may or may not have to mention this to a few of my bus-loving friends.

I love animals but this is too much. Cut the cord. Just for the day at least.

What's the reading? "woof woof meow meow"? lol

Do as GrumpyCat says... you can mention them in your vows in some little way. Don't make a reading FROM them. Its a bit much..

Thanks everyone! I had originally just asked that we mention them. Our officiant wrote it in like this, but I can change it.

@Kristy, I haven't read it. As I was looking at it, I decided going over the ceremony was something we should do together, so I shut it. But I think it's along the lines of that reading about how falling in love is like owning a dog. I think it was advice written from a dog's POV...go on long walks, take time to just lay in each other's lap, play, etc....I could be completely wrong, but I think that's the direction it was headed.

Our officiant did an awesome job at "mentioning a special friend who couldn't be with us today..." and a little pet blessing. Our guests giggled and I almost broke down in tears lol. I do think the reading is a little over the top, though.

    @Elyse - I love that!

I've heard personalized vows that include "vowing to love you, even through football season", "vow to always cheer for (fill in the blank team)", or one of my favorites "vow to always keep goldfish on hand for snacks". Definitely a place where you can incorporate something really personal Smiley smile
