Petite Dress Search= Nightmare

Sylvia, on May 22, 2019 at 11:10 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 30

Hi everyone! I have a dilemma before the dilemma even starts.

I HATE dress shopping because I am TINY and have a rectangular shape (no curves, nada, just a stick!) therefore any dresses I ever tried on was horrid. (Prom dress shopping was a disaster and I hated it.)

I don't want to feel like this when I go start looking at dresses. Smiley sad I am excited to look at and try on dresses, but I am just terrified that NOTHING will look good on me.

Anyone here have ideas or suggestions on shapes for us petite ladies?

I am 5'0 and 115 LBS.

Here are the 2 main dresses I have in mind:

https://www.essensedesigns.com/essense-of-australia/wedding-dresses/d2425/

https://www.essensedesigns.com/essense-of-australia/wedding-dresses/d2526/ (my DREAM dress)

My party is supportive and assure me I will find a dress, but what if I don't like ANYTHING because nothing will flatter me and my pale, petite, slim, curveless self.

Smiley sad BAH.

I'm 5'1" and about 125ish pounds and I looked best in tighter styles (sheath, fit and flare, mermaid) or A-line. I looked ridiculous in a ball gown which was pretty much what I expected. I would say just be open to trying on anything because you never know how it will look on you. Everything looks completely different person to person, and the way they look on the rack isn't how they will look once you have it on.

I'm just under 5'2" and 115 pounds. I'm pale af lol. You're going to look beautiful. Do not be discouraged and remain open minded. 98% of us on this site are not going to look like these stock images, that's okay!

I'm 5'2", 120 lbs. I went in with no makeup on, my hair up in a bun, no tan, etc. I went with just my mom, I felt more comfortable that way. I tried on EVERY dress style, shape, fabric, neckline, sleeves, etc. I could find. I found a dress with a lot of boning to force a waistline shape, were best for me. But I really encourage you to try on as many as possible. No one looks good in every dress!

I am sorry to hear that. You can always get it shaped up for your wedding if you know someone to do it or you could hire someone to do it!

Go for a sheath! You'll look beautiful in it! However, you'll need to wear heels for the perfect sheath effect. Good luck. Can't wait to see the pics.

I'm 5'1' and 125 pounds and I tried multiple styles. I ended up liking the fit and flare style the best on me, and that's what I ended up with. I felt swallowed whole in the ballgown styles personally, but the mermaid/sheath/fit and flare's were my favorite. I can't speak too much to feeling pale, I have relatively olive-colored skin, but I would just embrace the way you look and bring a group of people that are supportive and positive!

I felt the exactly the same I have a rectangle shape body, I’m 5’1” about 115 and I have a very small upper body and very long legs so when it came time to dress for prom and other events it was always very difficult I had this one dress that the torso was to long for me and so it bunched up but the tailor couldn’t recognize what was the problem until I figured out my torso just isn’t made for this dress. (They sadly couldn’t do anything about it so I had to take a bunched up dress to the ball like that) When I went wedding shopping the complete opposite happened most dressed looked good on me!! I was very surprised. I did let the person (looking for dresses) know my concerns and how I feel like I don’t really have a shape and I have a very small upper body so I want a dress that will make it look even with the rest of my body the person did a great job and picked dresses to work with my body I love my dress I have it gives me a great shape and makes me look like I have curves. Just let the people know of your concerns before they pick out any dresses

Thanks everyone! I am looking forward to shopping now!

How long did it take to find your dresses? My wedding is a year and 3 months away, but knowing me it'll take me a while to settle on a final dress!

I’m about the same size as you & I went with a ball gown since I don’t have natural curves. I feel like it made me look more like a women. & I actually found my dress at the first shop I went to.

Both of the dresses you showed us are gorgeous!! I also think that either one will probably flatter a shape like you described. It's important to keep in mind that your dress will eventually be altered, to your shape, size, height, etc. So, don't get too discouraged when trying on dresses, because obviously those are samples and won't fit you exactly right. Just remember to talk to your stylist about your concerns. Most of the time they are very good at finding what will look good on each individual woman. And be open to all styles, because you just never know what it's going to look like until you get it on. Don't worry, you'll be fine, and you'll find the "one." This isn't like prom dress shopping. Just from the comments here so far, you can see you're not the only one with that kind of shape/size. Good luck!!

I’m about your size... I think you are going to have a different problem than you think! I think just about every dress you will try on will look good on you. I definitely wouldn’t worry about this, don’t be hard on yourself

I cannot relate to your shape in any way. But dont be afraid to try ANYTHING on. Flared skirts, ball gowns, sheaths. Anything and everything.

A mermaid or a fit and flare would look so great on your body shape!

    Hi Sylvia Smiley smile

I’m so happy to read your more excited now about starting dress shopping!

Those two options you linked area beautiful!

Fantastic advice from the previous posters. So much support in this discussion Smiley heart

I would second what a lot of members have said, and advise you to be open, trying on lots of different options and don’t rule anything out when seeing it on a hanger!

The folks who work at the bridal salon are typically super experienced with helping shop for a variety of different body shapes and will guide you through the process.

Enjoy the process and let us know how it goes Smiley smile

I’m 5’1” and although I used to be an hourglass I’ve become more straight/rectangular or even slightly pear shaped. This is the dress I chose, which is an a-line. I’m having the top skirt layer removed due to damage but I also feel like it will look a little bit better Smiley smile the belt really helps make the look in my opinion

I completely understand where you’re coming from! I’m petite as well, only 5 feet tall and I have enormous boobs that don’t match the rest of my body ! I put off dress shopping for a while because every time I go shopping it’s super stressful and I get discouraged (case in point the nightmare that was shopping for a dress for FSIL wedding this weekend😓). From my experience the bridal consultants were super helpful and supportive. They are professionals, trust them to help you find a style for your body type. And you know what looks good on you and what you like. Make sure your consultant knows this to help you as well. I know this isn’t true for everyone, but we went shopping only once for my gown and it was the least stressful shopping experience of my life lol. I hope this is helpful to you, and I know you’ll find the dress of your dreams! Good luck !
