Pets in Engagment Photos

Suggestions on pets in your engagement photos? I have four Catahoulas and a jack russell, but only the jack and one of the catahoulas were "our" dogs (the others I got when we were briefly separated and our girl got pregnant and I kept two pups). I was tempted to put them in the engagement photos, but they're so rambunctious that I'm not sure how it would go! Any tips or tricks on putting dogs in the shoot? Am I crazy? Should I just bring "our" dogs? Help!!

If your going to some of them id do all of them but im all about being "fair" when it comes to doggos if one gets 5 min of pets so does the othere lol, take them for a looonnnngggg walk or trip to a dog park before the photo shoot to mellow them out

Bring treats or favorite toys. Our doxie was over it and just wouldn't pay attention to the photographer - she kept looking literally anywhere else. We did get good pics though.

We had our dog in pictures. We did those first. My dad met us at the location, my dog is rambunctious so after we finished taking pictures with my dog my dad took him home and we finished the pictures of just my FH and I. It worked out great.

Do you have a dog park where they can be off leash while you take them?

Can you do photos at a nearby beach? This way you and FH can play around in the water and so can the dogs. Our photographer does it a lot and the pictures have be amazing! Or maybe at a park, set up a picnic and have some food or treats out for them. Any place that involves movement where they won't look all over the place should do the trick. Good luck!

Here are some examples from our photographer...the pillow fight is also very good because they can get in there and tear the pillows up lol!!! It'll be super fun and not your traditional engagement photos.

My dog is INSANE he is still a puppy and he’s a golden and doesn’t sit still ever. It was a challenge, but we got some good pics. Now multiplying the number of dogs may be hard, but worth it for pics if they’re part of your family!

I cannot begin to imagine 4 catahoulas and a Jack Russell! We have one catahoula and she is a handful 💕 we had a friend go along to handle her and made sure to really tire her out before the session. It’s also important to make sure your photographer is comfortable with them- if not they will definitely pick up on that energy. Best of luck!!

Our dog was afraid of the big camera/lens idk why!?🤦🏻‍♀️. So didn’t get any with him. He is typically brave and loves to bark and guard the house so Idk might depend on your dog and how he feels. He is photogenic and doesn’t mind when we take regular photos so idk.

I'm so grateful we had my service dog, Gaston, in our engagement pics. They were taken in January and he passed away June 14, 2019. He was to walk me up the aisle. I say get help and do it for the memories. Best of luck!! ❤

Bring treats. Email your photographer and tell them about your anxieties to see if they have recommendations. Our photographer loved dogs and got our dog to relax, but don’t assume that will be the case with your photographer. Stake out the engagement photo location. Try to find a time or place that is more isolated from distractions. We selected our favorite state park and took pictures near a quiet trail. Shots came out beautifully.

So FH and I really wanted to include our pup in our photos, especially because we didn't have any of the three of us. He is excited and crazy 100% of the time, so I was a little worried about how it would go. BUT as soon as we got him sat down in front of us and our photographer pointed her camera at him, he looked dead at her! Then she made a little noise with her mouth that she said she used to use to make babies smile when she worked for a department store photo center and his ears perked up and he loved it! We were so happy with how they turned out, he blew us away with how good he was for the photos. Even when he took a break to be silly and roll in the grass, we still got great pictures!

I don't have any of our photos back yet since we just did them yesterday, but we took our year and half old puppy along with us. I was SO thankful for my mom wrangling her, because there is no way we could have done it. The first spot we went had a ton of people (totally didn't realize there was a trick or treat event happening), so with all the new people she wore herself out fairly quick for the next spot. When it was time to incorporate her my mom stood right behind the photographer with treats to keep her attention.

Tire the dogs out before the pictures, long walk and maybe running around park, have treats and have someone if possible take them home after picture or mind them so you guys can get some candid pictures without them.

We just got ours done about a week or so ago, and the preview pictures we got were (of course) the ones with the doggos. Our photographer was great and our pups were having so much fun-we did the dogs as the last part of our session. It was a little difficult to get their attention to the camera since there were other people around, but they still turned out adorable.

We had our one dog at the time and it was just us and the photographer. We should've had an extra person to make him look and had treats. He was not misbehaved, just very excited about all the smells and sites in the park. I can't imagine doing it with 5 dogs, 4 of them being big dogs. I think trying to coordinate 5 dogs for maybe only a 1 hour photo session will cut back the time for shots of you and your FH. It's up to you but I would also consult with your photographer.
