Photo Book as a Guest Book

Kimpy, on July 29, 2011 at 4:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

Hey hey. I was thinking about making a photobook online and using it as my guest book. The design has a lot of lines, so I think there is definitely enough space for people to just sign their names or write a message. I had a few questions!

Do you think this is a good idea because it will have all old pictures and not new pictures? I was thinking I could get a scrapbook and have them sign that and just fill it later, but I really am not a big fan of the look of a scrapbook.. I would rather them sign a book that had a lot of awesome pictures from the past.

If you have used this, what type of pens should the guests use? I don't know if I should get thin sharpies, or sharpie-like markers? I (hopefully) don't want it to bleed through or cut through the paper!

    1. mine wont have lines, just open space around the photos- more like a yearbook from highschool.

    2. i think old pictures are fine.

    3. we will have the sharpie pens for ours.

I made a shutterfly book of our epics. It looks awesome! usually they are glossy pages so you will want a ball point pen rather than a gel pen or marker. I spaced it out with 1 or 2 pics on one page and the next page blank or 1 pic per page, etc. With 20 pages and 250 guests (i.e. 125 signatures) there will be about 6-10 signatures per page.

You can upload pics to a site like shutterfly that are old if you want to. You can also buy guestbooks where you stick the pictures inside the pages.

Like Evelyn, we are using a guest book made from our engagement photos. And it won' t be lined so people can do whatever they want in the space. My daughter once traced her hand and wrote her name inside of the tracing in our friends guestbook and they thought it was the cutest thing.

I create guest signing books from engagement sessions - a very popular option, and it looks a lot nicer than a signing mat. Design is really important - you can do it as mentioned above with pages that have lines next to pages filled with images, or yearbook-style images to sign around. The way I do it is with a 10x8 book with images on the right hand side mounted on hard black pages. The left side is blank with the same hard black page. A silver metallic pen is provided.

Whatever you do, be sure you get a fast-drying pen so that the signatures and wishes don't rub off on your images when the pages are turned.

We are doing a shutterfly photobook as our guest book- no lines. the pages are black and they will sign with a fine point silver sharpie. Dont get the off brand off the sharpie they smudge on glossy pages.

We are also doing a shutterfly book with engagement pictures for our guestbook, no lines, just blanks around the pictures. I'm going to test pens in an old book to see what works the best without smudging.

You could even get sharpie pens in the colors of your wedding i think that would be/look cute in the book Smiley smile instead of just black. if i dont have a photobooth we are doing this option.

We're using a Shutterfly photobook as well. FH says that the traditional guestbooks look like "funeral" books. LOL! I used pictures like a timeline of our relationship. I did some research and it is suggested that the best writing tool is an ultrafine Sharpie. It won't bleed thru and is fast drying. I even found a vendor on Etsy that wraps them in ribbon to make it look like a cool feather pen.

Do not use Sharpie pens on the photo papers, if it's just regular paper - fine. There is a dye in them that will fade over time. Be sure whatever pens you do get are acid free. These are what we also use to write on fabrics in quilting and they are also available in colors. You can pick them up at Michaels, or Joanne's. I'm not sure about Hobby Lobby or some of the other stores back East. They are a bit more expensive than Sharpie's.
