Photo editing help for DIY boudoir photoshoot

FireWife, on December 2, 2012 at 8:11 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

Today I will be doing my boudoir photo shoot at my friends house. She took photography for 4 years and is willing to do this for me for free (yay for friends!!) BUT I don't have a good photo editing software so I was searching online today to try and find something I could use besides paint lol. I came across this website http://gimpshop.com/photoshop/?gclid=CPz1yubk-7MCFQUFnQodlC8Aag and wanted to see if any of you had heard of this or know of anything else I can use. I'm not wanting to pay $700 for a program that I will most likely only use once.

Any advice or help is super appreciated Smiley smile

While I have never used it, I have heard from others that Gimp is a great free alternative to photoshop. With that said, both programs have a big learning curve and if you have never used software like it, you will probably be pretty lost.

What I think would probably work better for you than a photoshop type program, would be Adobe Lightroom. I think LR would allow you to get better results with having no experience with photoshop. You can also download a free 30 day trial of it from Adobe so that you aren't paying any money for something you will likely not use again.

You'd probably be better off hiring someone to edit the photos. Good photo editing takes more time to learn than it takes to perform.

If you do want to take on the task of editing it yourself, aside from some technical details that will make prints look off to you (monitor calibration, stuff like that), MrsO's suggestion of the 30 day free trial of Lightroom is a fantastic suggestion.

I've worked with photoshop a lot, and honestly.. GIMP doesn't cut it for detailed photo editing, in my opinion. I would definitely try some trials for editing, like MrsO said. I'm fairly certain you can do a trial with Photoshop.

Thank you so much for your comments and suggestions ladies!! I really do appreciate it. I think I will try the free trial or Lightroom and see how it turns out. I'm pretty good with computers so hopefully it wont be to hard to navigate. If all else fails I'll make most of the pictures b/w lol.

I'll let you ladies know how it turns out. I'm super excited though!!!

Careful with the b/w conversions, Lindsay, a sub-par color photo often makes for a still sub-par black and white photo.

Your friend wont do it? She took photography so she should have a program or two. They are required to learn PS in the curriculum.

Make sure you get the pictures in a format your computer can read. If you want to retouch skin Lightroom does not do well here but for lighting adjustment or the like LR is great. Definitely a big learning curve for any professional program. Freebie programs dont expect much.. they are free. Also your computer needs to be able to handle such programs, they are space and power hogs.

Agreed Eddie. B&W's are more tricky than one thinks..

Lindsay, I have years of photography experience, including Photoshop. I'm a little busy this week, as my wedding is Sunday, but if you want to PM me, I'd be happy to edit one or two photos as best as I could (a lot will come down to the original quality of the photo). If you're understandably leery, I'm always more than happy to show off my portfolio to back up my claims. Smiley smile

@Eddie A.- Thank you so much for your offer! I really do appreciate it, but I wouldn't want to impose this close to your wedding (congrats by the way!!)

My friend who did the photography did have a program she could use so we sat down that night and went thru all of them and did the editing. She really did a fantastic job. I love them. I think everything will turn out really great Smiley smile

You ladies are fantastic and I don't know what I would do without my WW family!!
