Photography Question. Who will you use for your prints?

Rhonda, on June 14, 2016 at 6:24 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 25

We were married October 2015, and have just last night picked up our "cd" of wedding pictures, all 378 images. Our package gave us a choice of either choosing 128 prints, with no rights to all of the pictures until 3 years went by, which only then, the photographer would release the rights to us, or the cd with all the pictures now. I've never used online sites to print pictures, or make albums, and I have no idea other than Shutterfly, who to use for the best quality prints and album options. We considered using our photographer for prints/albums, but the prices are astronomical - and so many people have told me you can get them from online. The pictures were already "touched up" so the photographer says. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

That is definitely an interesting arrangement with the photographer.

I've had good experiences with printing through Flickr and Zazzle.

Mpix. It's a pro quality lab, but anyone can use it.

Whoa, so many great suggestions, I can't tell you how much I appreciate them all. Thank you. Yes, I thought it was a weird arrangement with the photographer too. We spent bottom dollar on our photographer in comparison to other couples. $1200. The average costs around us for established photographers with a business were $1500+. So, I guess you get what you pay for. That cost included what it included and that was it. No albums. The pictures aren't as beautiful as some others I have seen on here, WW ... creativity was non-existent. Photography wasn't 1 of our priorities, we just wanted pics to remember the day ... sigh ... kinda wish we splurged a little more on a better photographer and/or package. The mpix sound great. I will look into all of them. Thanks again!

I choose to use a local printing company in my area, just so much better quality! I have also heard that Costco does a decent job, and Shutterfly.

Wait for a deal with Shutterfly. They do unlimited 4x6 prints all the time - you just pay shipping. I'm making a free photobook with them right now for engagement pics.

    For consumers, I recommend :

www.mpix.com for reprints and canvas wraps

www.tinyprints.com or www.peartreegreetings.com for press printed pieces

www.shutterfly.com wedding series albums (heavy weight papers, uv coated, stitched binding, padded cover)

Mpix is a branch of a national professional printing lab. Once photographers started selling reprint rights, the pro lab began losing a lot of proofing and reprint business. They opened up the consumer/retail side to get that business back. The retail side is Mpix!

Shutterfly and honestly Walmart have always been my go-to for prints! The prices are great and I've never had an issue with bad quality.

I ordered my photo guest book from Artisan State (they just changed their name to Zno) and it is beautiful! And I get most of my one-hour fast prints from Walgreens as a Walmart alternate for decent quality 4x6s.

I don't have a specific lab suggestion because I ordered prints through my photog's lab through his site, but I can say that I'd definitely use a pro lab vs. Shutterfly. The price difference is worth it. I ordered some Shutterfly prints and just looking at them alone they seem fine, but when held next to the same photo printed from a pro lab the difference is obvious. They're fine for everyday printing, but I wouldn't recommend for important wedding photos that you plan to put on display.

I've heard wonderful things about the books from https://www.mypublisher.com/. They have premium album options and the prices look high but sign up for the emails. I swear I get information about a sale AT LEAST once a month!

ETA: The hidden one is the same comment. I accidentally double clicked and it posted twice.

I find that Target does great prints. I try to get mine done locally because we don't have a regular mailbox and instead have a small slot attached to the house. Our mail carriers don't seem to get that large stuff should be either put in the door or just knock and give it to me and instead they fold it and shove it in so any prints I order through the mail get ruined. Walgreens and CVS both use subpar printers so I won't go near them.
