I'd say go for the pie, it really isn't that strange or anything. And if your mom is still upset about it, she really doesn't get a say unless she's funding the wedding. Or you could do a mixture, that's what I'm planning on.

I think pie is great at a wedding!
But then again, half my family always have pie for their birthday instead of cake.

I say both but I have a big sweet tooth and love pie and cake lol You could always do mini pies or have a small cake for you and your s/o, or have cupcakes and pies. There's a few options.

I am getting married October 2020 as well, congrats!
I never thought to do pie instead of cake! I LOVE THAT IDEA! But I also want to do the traditional top tier of cake on our 1yr anniversary.
Maybe do a dessert table with a couple of pie options as well as a small wedding cake?
