Future Mrs.Bush 14, on November 2, 2013 at 6:10 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 23

Has anyone ever done a pig roast wedding reception?

or been to one?

we are having a small under 100 persons wedding.

it will be simple but rustic.

what are your thoughts on it?

*what types of food would you like to see at a pig roast wedding reception??*

we are thinking of doing one for our Sept 2014 wedding in Vermont.

I think if that's what you want, you should do it. But if I were going to do it, I would go all the way. I would make it like a Hawaiian luau, I would have tiki torches, orange and purple flowers, maybe drinks in coconuts, flower leis for the guests.

I agree with the previous post. If you were going to do a pig roast (by the way, where I'm from we call that Cochon de Lait), I'd do the whole shabang!

We are doing one because it's tradition here in HI to have a roast at a wedding. It was an absolute necessity for FH and our families are meat eaters so I'm excited for the grande feeling of it being displayed on the table with a guy cutting it for you

I was originally going to do a pig roast and still debating on doing it. We have a big roasting box that you can roast a whole pig in. I think its a great idea I think I just decided to go more formal.

If you're going to have the pig on a big spit and you want it to be a focal point of your reception then I agree that all the way would be fun. If you just want it as food I don't think it needs to be a luau. I was going to serve mine with roasted vegetables and salad. No where near luau.

That sounds awesome! Just have enough vegetarian side sides for those who don't eat pork.

    Sounds fun!

just don't forget to consider the people that might be allergic to pork!

Sounds nice! If you don't want a luau theme, just make it a casual wedding.

I dont think of a pig roast as "Hawaiian" per se but then again I grew up in Central Illinois and was invited to at least one a year from the age of about twelve until I moved to California in 95.

I would say if you want to do it as rustic you might consider an outdoor wedding. For the ceremony rope off an area and have hay bales covered in quilts for people to sit in (visit thrift shops starting now to roundup the quilts, and then after the wedding donate them to a homeless shelter). Then perhpas have tents outside or access to a barn turned venue that you could set up with tables with simple decor and make sure to have/prepare sides that go well with the pork.

Or if you want to do this "more traditional" and perhaps historical watch the very beginnings of Gone With The Wind for the barbecue at Twelve Oaks that will give your event a southern flair (an area where pig roasts were also popular).

You could also "stage" your wedding as an old fashioned "barn raising"......

Been to 2! they were an absolute blast!!

one was very casual, backyard wedding with a pig roast and bonfire (super fun!).

one was very formal -pig roasted outside, cut out of site and served a few different ways in a buffet. There was a lot of smoke though. this is something to consider if you or your guests are sensitive.

Jet is right; lots of smoke. Cook outside the tent and serve on platters.

I would offer an alternate too. I think its a great idea but I cannot see someone cutting my food off the animal before I eat it.

Our family does a lot of pig roast so we are all used to it.

we are having an outdoor ceremony by the lake

and the reception is at an old barn.

I think it would be great. You just need to decide if it will be ceremonial and pretty formal like traditional luaus in Hawaii or casual feeling like a pig pickin' popular in the South.

I attended one that was absolutely horrific. -_-

However, it can be very nicely done and be a lot of fun if done properly. You can totally pull off the rustic theme especially with the ceremony and reception setting you just mentioned. I personally would stay away from the Hawaiian theme unless I was having my wedding and reception in Hawaii.

Just be sure to make sure the pig roasting won't have smoke that blows right into the barn! Good luck!

We are considering doing the same thing. I think the important thing to consider to make sure it doesn't feel like a hillybilly fest is china. As I keep telling everyone paper plates are NOT ok!

My FH wanted to do a pig roast, but I have a super hardcore vegan in my bridal party and I don't think I have the heart to giver her a heart attack...and the FMIL put the foot down on roasting a whole animal.

But if it weren't for those two things, I would love to do a pig roast! In my culture roasting a pig is celebratory and it wouldn't need to be a luau.

    I vote do one.
