Pizza buffet

Shelby, on October 2, 2016 at 7:42 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 25

Has anyone else done a pizza buffet? How did you keep your pizza warm and make sure the buffet is stocked? We are probably not going to have wait staff due to funding. Also, our venue doesn't have a kitchen.... Thanks for any tips/advice.

    My advice?

Do something else. You have no kitchen, no waitstaff?

Nope. Unless you have it all delivered hot, at once, and people eat it all, at once. Like a football game.

If there isnt a kitchen I would avoid foods you want to be kept warm.

Pizza buffets can be nice if you have a caterer on-site making and serving the pizza fresh. But otherwise, the pizza can easily become cold and soggy.

The only thing I can think of is if you have each table have their own pizzas.

It's really hard to keep things warm without a kitchen, and pizza's really only good when hot and fresh. How about getting some food trucks that specialize in pizza to come make it on site and cater it for your guests?

I definitely think a caterer is needed if you want pizza as your food choice. The only reason that we are able to do a pizza bar is because our venue is all inclusive and their gourmet pizzas are well talked about. Other wise I think it's too sketchy to try to keep it warm and yummy. You don't want people struggling to eat soggy, cold pizza.

ETA: I also don't think you want pizza being delivered in the middle of your reception. Seems too tacky IMO.

You're going to have to buy the equipment to keep the pizza warm, in addition to silverware, plates, glasses, etc. There's also the cleaning supplies for the breakdown of it, not to mention buying enough food to accommodate everyone; everyone being able to get a slice or two of pizza, a helping of the side dishes, and beverages.

Honestly, I would recommend looking into a professional catering service.

We actually nixed doing pizza for this reason. My mother's idea was to have them constantly deliver the pizza ever X minutes. But between managing the boxes, keeping it warm, disposing of the boxes, etc. It was too much of a headache and not pragmatic or realistic. We've since found a caterer that advertises BBQ but has a huge range of cooking abilities and will be taking care of all our food.

@Jay there were so many steps in your comment that I was too tired just from reading it to try and think of ways to make that happen on an already busy wedding day.

Our caterer has an oven truck they ring onsite and make the pizzas right at the venue.... maybe try to find a pizza caterer like that?? Pay extra, it'll be worth it

Pizza food truck!!! That's the only way you can pull this vision you're having for pizza off. I'm having a food truck and I'm so excited!

From a lady who used to work at Papa Johns... please do a food truck. I had to constantly go back and forth all night to a reception out in the woods for a wedding once. Between me and another guy I would be driving in and he would be driving out. People complained because they only ordered cheese and pepperoni I had to explain to some guests it was not me who was choosing the toppings.

Hire a professional caterer who will have equipment to cook and keep the pizzas at a safe temperature

I don't think pizza is going to work for your situation. Other foods you could keep warm with a chafer dish, but definitely not pizza. We picked up Mexican food from a restaurant for our rehearsal dinner and kept it warm in chafers. It was doable for 60 people. Of course, this was a rehearsal dinner and not a wedding. Everyone pitched in to clean up at the end (unasked) and we were done in about 10 minutes.

You have to have a pro. They'll take care of all of those concerns and they'll be the ones held liable if someone falls ill, not you.

We thought about pizza but the logistics held us back.

We went with a small local caterer within our budget who set up a Buffett.

If your mainly thinking pizza for budget reasons look into Italian and bbq. If not there are gourmet wood fire pizza caterers who fire up fresh pizzas on site but they were more pricey.
