Plan B/morning after pill

Danielle, on October 29, 2010 at 9:19 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 31

Ok, for those of you who believe that this is the "Abortion pill", I appreciate your opinions, but please do not post here. Thanks ladies Smiley smile

Tuesday night, FH and I had unprotected sex (too "in the moment" to go upstairs and get protection...so stupid). So, Wednesday morning I took Plan B(well, "The Next Choice" which is like the generic, but the same thing) for the first time. Ever since then, I've been feeling like I got hit by a truck! My stomach is crampy (expected that), but my bones ache, my head hurts, my chest hurts, etc. Has anyone else had these issues after taking Plan B? What was your experience with it?

And on a side note, why is it so crazy expensive? $55! If it's supposed to be for teens who are trying to avoid unwanted pregnancies, most of them don't have that kind of cash! Nuts.

I've never taken it but one of my best friends did. She described the side effects as "the worst period ever", and it lasted about three days and her cycle was irregular for two months after that. It is a massive amount of hormones in a very short period of time, so that is why your body gets all out of wack.

I have taken it twice, but I didn't have any memorable side effects either time. My AF came 2 days earlier each time I took it, but that was it. I rarely ever experience side effects from any medication though (except for really strong anti-biotics I had once..Smiley atonished ). I do remember the pharmacist saying that I might get nauseous, have a head-ache, have cramping, and spotting or AF and that it could mess with my cycle.

I took it about 6 years ago and it knocked me on my a$$. I also had cramps, felt nauseous and had body aches. Kinda like having the flu while on my period. Only lasted 3-4 days though. I got it at Planned Parenthood (My ex-gyn refused to prescribe it to me) and I think it was $40 back then. They probably charge so much in the hopes it will deter buyers. Stupid.

It didn't affect me too much. Just got a little nauseous. I think we paid $40 at Walgreens for it, and that was only like a month or two ago. You can get them at Planned Parenthood for free/for a donation as well.

I took it 9 (!) years ago, so my memory is a little fuzzy of the after effects. Whatever they are, it'll pass soon, just get lots of rest and drink lots of water. At the time I did get it at Planned Parenthood as K.C. says, and she's right, it's cheaper there. The only problem is their limited hours, if you need it right away you may be out of luck.

@L Turtle Yeah, that's what happened to us. It was over a weekend and PP was closed so we had to go to Walgreens. The pill can be taken up to 48 hours (..or something like that) after the fact but it loses its effectiveness the longer you wait.

Yeah, I ran out the next morning to Walgreens, I wouldn't have thought to call the doc for a prescription, or go to planned parenthood. But I'm supposed to start my birth control (back on it after having my IUD removed in May) after my period. But if this is going to mess with my cycle....aw crap. I'll call the doc. Shoulda just gone upstairs, lol

I tried it once, and I didn't have any side effects (it was about 4 years ago). I think it may be like periods, we're all different. I hope you start to feel better soon Smiley sad

I used it about 8 years ago. I don't remember anything out of the ordinary.

I have never used it and although you said not to post here.. I have to.

I don't know exactly what it does to your body but it is my understanding that all those hormones just drive your system wild and the whole point is exactly that your body won't allow for any implantation in case the egg was fertilized.

    Hope you feel better soon!

@ Yady, your post is fine. I just didn't want anyone to go on a yelling, ravage rant about how I killed my unborn, un-conceived child. And yes, when you point that out, you're exactly right. I know they mess with your system, which is why I had never taken it, but just didn't want to chance a pregnancy when we've already invested so much in a wedding (otherwise, I'd be perfectly happy to be preggies again!)

It prevents fertilization, if you're already pregnant it wouldn't abort. So those people are crazy ;]

all pp's explained the side effects perfectly, unfortunately. Hope you feel better soon, and next time go upstairs =P

oh yeah, at (un)planned parenthood, they're free!

When my daughter needed to use it once, I told her to take Dramamine an hour before getting it. I've heard that helps with the side effects.

When I took Plan B (I was 18, so this was 7 years ago!!), Planned Parenthood also gave me an antinausea pill to take with it because of the side effects of Plan B. Anyway, I was out cold for at least 24 hours because they made me sooooooo incredibly tired and sick feeling. It was in the middle of moving too and I had to take the whole day off to sleep. Luckily, it only lasted about 24-hours, but it was nice to sleep it off...

FMW - exactly, if Plan B is an abortion pill, then in the same misguided thought so are condoms, birth control and even the rhythm method - they ALL prevent fertilization.

I think it may be expensive to avoid abuse. The pill is okay to use here and there, but they don't want it to be a girl's sole go-to practice. I'm pretty sure it can be damaging to the reproductive system if taken often (don't quote me, though).

@Kerri--Mirena (IUD) is actually a constant flow of a hormone very VERY similar to that in Plan B. It creates a "hostile" environment so that egg can't implant on the uterine wall. So it's not damaging to take often but def not recommended since it's abusing the reason for Plan B.

@Danielle--I used to work at WG and most insurances will only cover it for teenagers, 18 or 21 and under (which bothered me but it makes sense), so it wouldn't have saved much money. Unfortunately. I know that my Mirena gives me HORRIBLE aches and pains the day after sex so I've always wondered if it kicks up the flow of hormones when it senses the man juice. I get crampy as well. Hope you start to feel better soon!

I took it about 3 years ago and just felt a bit queasy and grumpy. I went ahead and bought two, and kept one in my medicine cabinet for years. I think everyone should do that. I chucked it because I figured it had probably expired, and FS and I had agreed to see any 'accidents' as blessings.

I've never taken it before, but I've considered it a few times. With those kinds of side-effects, is it really safe to take? I mean if it throws your body that much out of whack, it would kind of scare me to take it. Does anybody know if it can cause any kind of lasting effects?
