Planning a Anime Themed Wedding....PLEASE HELP

TynekwaW, on January 2, 2016 at 12:02 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 13

Hello Everyone!

Me and My fiance have been engaged since February 12 of last year, 2015. We have been together for almost 4 years now. What brought us together was Anime. We both enjoyed it as our favorite hobby, and we had so much in common, that we decided "hey, want to go out for coffee?." Years later and here we are. We plan on getting married September 25, 2015, which is the first day we decided talking and also our first to say "I love you."

We finally found our venue and made a down deposit. We are getting married at Rock Springs, Greenville, NC. I have as well found my dress, but have not yet purchased it.

We want a theme thought has brought us together and has more meaning. We wanted our wedding to be as well unique and represented us. So we decided to have a anime wedding. Or at least animated shows that we loved and inspired us.

We are having a difficult time somewhat of how to plan it out and how to come up with ideas to make our wedding them a reality. Please Help!!!

The thing with themes- especially bolder ones is usually including small things that you love- if you make it to over the top- guests won't relate as well to it and it winds up being weird- so little accents** and details- broaches buttons- centerpieces and cakes and flowers and shoes- all help give you a theme without making your wedding into walking comic con- unless that's what you wanted- in which case- go ham.

    edit*accents- not accidents.

Have you looked ideas like this up on Pinterest? Or googled weddings themed around anime?

JoRocka nailed it. What is a favourite the two of you share? Take little mentions out of that and put them in your wedding, but don't make it "themed". If you both love Miyazaki maybe have it in your wedding cake, put little nods to the movies in your centerpieces etc.

Also- invitations/programs/fans/food and the menu can help reflect and be a good way to represent what you want AND give people an idea about what you're hinting at for your "theme"

edit- here's a steam punk one- nod to steampunk without screaming it

I'm going to assume you guys aren't East Asian (diaspora or otherwise) -- if you are, ignore this with my apologies. Please be careful with how you go about this. It's super, super easy for American anime fans to slip from enjoying the cartoons to fetishizing and appropriating East Asian culture in general.

I'd recommend you refer to This Is Not Japan for examples of what not to do. In general, you're probably fine if you treat it like a Doctor Who- or Harry Potter-themed wedding, with cute references to specific shows, or specific genres like mecha anime -- but stay far, far away from generic "Oriental" decor/themes, don't wear kimono/hanfu/ao dai/other East Asian traditional dress unless it actually is part of your culture, and so forth.

Hey Bryce! Yes we have thought about making Miyazaki the #1 part of our wedding! We found a cake topper from Howl's Moving Castle. Thank you so much for the advice.

Omg, I love you both so much right now. I'm also a huge anime fan, so I'm using paper lanterns, and cupcakes to incorporate it in. I'm also drawing pictures of us and our story to make kids coloring books.

You could ask guests to cosplay (or at least have props/costumes for them to use with a photo booth)! You could have accessories like shoes, cuff links, ties, etc with Miyazaki characters.

This couple had a similar theme wedding! Look how cool it turned out! http://offbeatbride.com/2014/09/studio-ghibli-wedding

    Shoes:

Your cake could be a theme cake like these

These lanterns could be used as center pieces.

You could have "masks" for a photo booth like the picture posted.

You could have your flower girls or ring bearer wear a costume like the picture below.

I am so jealous! I wish I could do an anime theme wedding!!!!

I am having an anime themed wedding. It's actually pretty fun and easy to plan. Our theme is Fairy Tail and One Piece. We will be cosplaying Erza and Zoro. Our party will be dressed in character. If you want to go all out, expect things to cost more. Instead of carrying a bouquet of flowers, i bought a sword that was like one of her He has the 4 swords. Our wedding cakes will be fairy Tail One Piece theme. Decorations and music anime themed. The one piece flag, wanted posters, fairyTail tattoos, themed invitation and returns, and just having fun. Our party favors are action figures and we are having a costume contest at the reception. So far, we've kept this under $12,000. Look for a venue that feels like anime. Ours is a castle. The feel is epic. Find people who think k your idea is awesome. Go with a shared favorite anime or several. Make them your own. This will be an awesome experience.

I was just going to suggest a photo station with props from your favorite animes! I'd also agree with PPs that the details are where you can really play with your theme. RSVP's, invites, menues, programs, etc. I'd also check out Offbeat Bride (http://offbeatbride.com/). Their site often has DIYs and photo inspiration for weddings that aren't your usual wedding-themed wedding. I know I've seen anime weddings featured on there!

My bff/moh and her husband had an anime portrait done of them on their wedding day. She is also a Manga artist herself, so to personalize our day, she is doing chibis of my fh and I for our save the dates and invites. If you don't know someone who can draw really well, it probably wouldn't be hard to find someone or something online that you could send a photo to. (I know this is super late but I found your post when I googled the same thing so I figured it might help someone who ends up here the same way I did. Please post with some of the ideas you used)
