Planning a wedding surrounded by obstacles....advice needed.

Gina, on August 16, 2021 at 4:37 PM Posted in Planning 0 3

I'm planning our wedding for May 2022. Other than having my dress and the deposit down on the location which is a restaurant who is taking care of food, alcohol, tables, chairs.....nothing else is planned. A childhood friend is ordained and marrying us and I am going for a low key dinner and cocktails vibe. 2021 has been a stressful one obviously for everyone since we are in a pandemic but we both have been dealing with a lot with our parents health. More so my fiancé's father. He recently had a stroke and has now been diagnosed with dementia. I feel torn on what to do. We live in Southern California but more inland and our wedding is an hour and a half away at the beach. The idea of not knowing what his health will be like come May makes me feel like I should eat my deposit, and have a small backyard family wedding. I am nervous to go full steam ahead and book a photographer, etc. and things get worse. Having a wedding without him there at all is really not something I could consider. My fiancé would be devastated and we would not be able to enjoy ourselves.

What would you do?

Has your fiancé's family gotten any information about what the next 9 months could look like for his father? My grandfather had dementia, but it took three or so years after his diagnosis for it to seriously affect his functioning. He was still able to attend a couple weddings in the interim. You also have to consider if your FFIL will need a wheelchair or someone to look after him the day of. Every patient's timeline looks a bit different, but I wouldn’t cancel until they consult with the doctors and find out the chance of him declining a lot before May.

No, its all very fresh. I mean we knew something more was going on than just the stroke damage. If anything the stroke brought this on faster. After coming home from the doctor, he asked if the doctor knows what's wrong. Smiley sad He already forgot. He has a follow up with Neurology in October so I think we may know a little more after that. Thank you for your insight. I appreciate it.

I'm so sorry to hear this Gina. How is your fiancé feeling?? Has he mentioned wanting to change wedding plans or move the date?

I hope you get more insight and better news in October! Smiley heart
