Planning is challenging with diagnosed OCD

Carissa Brittney, on March 16, 2017 at 12:58 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 42

Question: we are diying most of our wedding. We made our menus, place cards, table cards, and our seating arrangement, and we are making our ceremony program.

Should they match? For instance, our invitation has purple watercolor flowers and same with our seating arrangement card, but our place cards and our menus are white flowers. I keep looking at it over and over again. Little details are very hard to deal with and I'm trying my best, but my anxiety and obsessive behaviors are causing little to get done.

That's up to you. No one will probably notice the differences. I love things to be coordinated, so I tried to make things match but it was much more for my satisfaction than my guests. As long as you host a party that has booze, music and good food no one will be nit picking over whether the menu matched the program.

Just saying, perhaps you should change the title of your post? OCD is an actual mental illness that many people suffer from, and it doesn't have much to do with matching invitations and seating cards.

I was also going to say to maybe change the title. Tossing around actual mental illness so casually, like OCD and bipolar, is a major pet peeve of mine. You don't toss around having physical illnesses as a joke, that should be no different.

As to your question, I think having things color coordinate but not match is fine, and I'm usually a little more anal retentive when it comes things being in order and matching.

I wanted all of my paper goods to match and worked a vendor to have STDs, invitations, menus, table numbers, and escort cards designed.

As PP have said, as someone with a mental illness I find it very insulting when people use mental illnesses to describe minor issues (Ex "I'm so bipolar", "I'm depressed because we didn't get Taco Bell", etc. So please change your post's title. Some people on here might actually suffer from OCD, and it doesn't just mean obsessively wanting things to match/ be clean. It can be very debilitating.

I'm sure as long as the colors coordinate then it should be fine, they don't have to match.

As a person with diagnosed OCD your subject title is extremely offensive.

I opened this thread hoping to commiserate with someone about wedding planning while dealing with OCD and was ready to share strategies. Honestly I'm annoyed. Edit your post title.

I agree with @MrsNerd on the title. Wanting to have your items match is not "OCD".

But it's entirely up to you. I personally think the price to have the matching stationary for my programs is worth it. So I'm going to get something that coordinates for much cheaper.

Yeah chill out with the OCD stuff please. I have OCD and this honestly isn't what the diagnosis is and it's insulting to a lot of people.

Echoing what @MrsNerd said about the title. OCD is a horrible disorder that is life-altering in a negative way - you don't have OCD because the crooked picture on the wall bugs you or because you alphabetize your DVDs. This is known as being anal retentive, not OCD.

That being said, yes, I am of the belief that your wedding should have a very defined "brand" and color palette, which should remain consistent throughout your print materials, decor, etc. It keeps your wedding professional looking, which is what you want after spending ridiculous amounts of money on it Smiley smile

The best way to go about this is by choosing a color palette first and sticking to it throughout planning. Have some main colors and then an accent color that will show in your wedding party attire and decor and especially your invitations. If flowers are part of your brand (aka theme), it's okay to have them be different colors - just include the purple and white in you palette.

It is disgusting you have OCD in your title flippantly. This is extremely insulting to those suffering from the disease. It's often debilitating - not the cute "Oh my god my things don't match completely."

Damnit, every time I see this post with new comments I'm hoping it's OP coming back to apologize for being so offensive and insensitive just before she changes her title to something more appropriate.

@mrsnerd -- I have a diagnosis of OCD, so I feel comfortable using it in reference to myself.

Maybe you shouldn't make assumptions about people and what illnesses they suffer from. Yes, OCD is an illness. And yes, matching things is a part of my trouble. So don't jump to conclusions about people.

@kelseyk -- being anal retentive is a part of being obsessive/compulsive. Are you a doctor?

Wow, you actually have OCD yet you're still posting this? As someone with OCD you should know how sensitive the topic can be for people. This is nuts. The second you're posting on a public forum, it's no longer "in reference to yourself." I feel like, and I don't want to assume this, you're just saying you have OCD now that everyone hopped on you about it. People with diagnosed OCD don't talk about it that way...just saying.

ETA: honestly just change the damn title.

Wow, I'm actually so insulted by the flippantly disgusting fact that you all believe OCD is a one size fits all illness. NO! It's not. Please read up. Don't make assumptions. I don't even want to be on this site anymore because I am so offended by you...

Totally ignoring some of this conversation...

Do you have pictures? I think the mis-matched could work for some things. We could take a look and let you know how it looks together!

No, I take pride in my diagnosis. I've overcome a lot and it's been a rough road. I'm not going to hide it but I didn't feel it necessary to announce it to the WW Critics...

And @acd -- people with diagnosed OCD don't talk about it that way? You know everyone with OCD?? You can't make generalizations. I'm done with this site.
