Planning without Facebook

Michelle, on January 12, 2021 at 7:16 PM Posted in Planning 1 22
Anyone else doing this?

While I have noticed that some vendors have an Instagram/Facebook only presence, not all do. Also we don't intend to buy anything just to resell later (linens, decor, etc) instead of renting and leaving the labor to the pros. Plus relatives/acquaintances we would prefer to not interact with. Is there anything that it is absolutely vital that a person planning would be missing if they didn't use Facebook? Or did you skip it altogether and still were able to find great deals and other inspiration easily?

I didn’t use Facebook and don’t see any place it would have been helpful. What exactly are you worried about? As far as vendors go, look on here or TheKnot for vendor reviews.

Not worried about anything. Just curiosity. Most of the vendor reviews I've read are on Yelp since they aren't removed like many here are.

You can absolutely plan without Facebook (or any social media, really, but I do like using Instagram as a tool for inspiration and researching vendors; Pinterest came in handy too).

Using sites like Wedding Wire, The Knot, etc., you'll find plenty. I found all of my vendors through WW except my photographer (Instagram), officiant (referral from a friend), and bakery (local place that we go to all the time).

I do like using FB, though. I'm part of a local wedding group that is part marketplace, part advice/discussion, and part vendor-seeking. We didn't buy or resell anything there, but I've asked questions and given advice. I forgot that I actually did find my hair stylist through this same FB group, after all the ones I reached out to via other methods just.. wouldn't respond to me.

However, I do think most professionals should have a website in addition to social media. I don't think I'd book with someone who only was available on Instagram or FB.

For reviews, I checked WW, The Knot, Google, and FB (you should be able to see FB reviews without logging in/having an account or anything).

I've found alot of vendors on Instagram as well as hair/makeup inspiration. But the majority that caught my eye, in addition to being off the beaten path of WW/theKnot selection, also have an independent website, which is a huge plus to see more of their work, read about them, see pricing info, etc. Those who had Instagram/Facebook as their only contact/resource were ruled out from the start.

The only social media I used for any wedding planning was Pinterest, and that was just for ideas and not actually any vendors or anything.

The only thing we used was Pinterest for ideas and Yelp for reviews.

Facebook isn't necessary. I will say I picked our photographer because I saw one of my Facebook friend's wedding photos on Facebook a few months before we got engaged and I loved her photos. Without Facebook, I wouldn't have had the photographer I hired.

I can't say that Facebook has played any role at all in our wedding planning.

I bought some decor off Marketplace, but I found Instagram to be much more helpful for finding vendors, getting ideas etc.

Yes Instagram has been very helpful for lesser known vendors and other ideas

I haven't used Facebook for any of my wedding planning tools. I've barely posted status updates about my wedding, for the sake of preventing drama. When my fiance and I decided to postpone our wedding last year, it was bad enough that a friend of mine - whom I honestly agonized over inviting but in the end decided not to - decided to make what he thought was a humorous comment about how we'd clearly decided to spare him and his girlfriend from COVID dangers by not inviting them. It was very poorly timed.

Social media weren't a thing untill mid-2000's, brides/grooms/parents could still plan a wed'! 😀 😁. But I have to admit: it helps a lot, especially for those who aren't a "natural planner"!

I only imagine that Facebook would be helpful if you were looking to buy used decor/wedding items from marketplace! I have Facebook and other social media and follow some of my vendors, so I see some post from the wedding venue and photographer, and of grazing tables that my caterer is making. I don't necessarily plan anything through Facebook, but it's been nice to sometimes see pictures of how others are decorating the venue etc.!
