Plantable Save the Dates?

Caitlin, on March 16, 2021 at 10:26 AM Posted in Planning 0 9
Hello! I’m really interested in cutting down on waste in general for our wedding, but it seems my idea of virtual save the dates and invitations is being nixed because it’s a bit too untraditional. Therefore, I am planning on trying seeded/plantable paper for our save the dates. Has anybody else tried this before? Would you recommend ordering them already made, or can this be a DIY project that’s fairly manageable?

Never heard of it but I wouldn't count on the majority to actually plant them. Just send a phone call/text as used to be how they were all sent before the trend for cards became a thing.

The best way to cut down on waste would be to either not send STD's (they are not necessary) or to send them electronically. Anyone that doesn't use email could be reached with a text or phone call. Most people would throw away this type of paper anyway.

I agree with the others above. While your idea is really interesting and unique, I doubt many guests will actually plant them. If I received one of these, I would most likely toss it once I receive the invite since I live in an apartment with nowhere to plant things. If you know the majority of your guests have planting space, and will do this, then go for it!

If you end up not going this route, you could always not send STD's and just send out invites a little bit earlier than normal to give your guests time to plan! To save on waste for this, you can choose them to be printed on recycled paper, which is an option on different platforms like Zola and Minted. Another way to save paper is to have all information on your wedding website, and just have your link on your invite. That way you won't have to order enclosure cards or RSVP cards with return envelopes.

What used to be the norm for everyone for decades before save the date cards came into popularity 10 years ago at most, the couple would call important people to let them know at the 6 month mark. Then they sent invites at the standard 6-8 weeks. No confusion at all.

It was incredibly important to us to focus on sustainability when booking vendors. We ended up going with Paper Culture for our save the dates and invites because they are tree positive and carbon neutral (every order plants a tree, and they pay for offsets for every part of their process.) My fiance wanted to do virtual RSVPs only, but I was worried about our older guests. Our compromise was to do plantable RSVPs from Botanical Paperworks. We got a design that fit with our invite suite, and included a note on the information card about RSVPs being available online and to please plant your card if you RSVP online. A lot of people figured that out on their own, some still preferred to send it back. I made a point to tell everyone I hadn't gotten it back from when we did the uninviting calls to plant their cards. We'll either plant the cards we got back or we'll divvy them up for people to plant.

This doesn't work for everyone, but it has worked really well for us. People really loved the plantable cards.

I agree with everyone on this, either don't do save the dates or send them electronically. Most people will throw them out instead of planting them. I'm with you on cutting down on waste unfortunately not everyone cares about this sort of stuff especially when it costs them time or money. And i'm not saying that this will cost guests money. I'm just saying in general.

I love the idea, but... your guests would need access to someplace to plant them. We live in a city and don't have outdoor space to call our own, so we would have to throw it out.

Either skip the STDs or get them on recycled paper.

I understand! Luckily, even our few city guests are into plants, so I think they’d actually love planting something. But I hear you!
