Plastic Cups versus Glass Cups?

T., on February 22, 2013 at 1:44 AM

Our rental company provides glassware that's around the same price as if we got disposable plastic glassware. Every where I read plastic is the better deal. But if we get plastic glassware it will be thrown away, so wouldn't that be money down the drain? Does anyone prefer plastic over glass cups?...

Does anyone prefer plastic over glass cups? Or vice versa?

Thanks for all the answers. I'm honestly not worried about it looking tacky. If my guests think it's tacky looking oh well, cause I would think if someone has plastic, they went within their budget. Unless I'm fishing out the dough, I have no place to judge them.

But I can see what people are saying about the look. I'm more worried about the waste. Having to spend all that money and it only gets thrown away. My FH is worried that we won't be able to resell anything that we actually purchase.

Having a backyard BBQ wedding. Feeling like glass will be out of place. Haven't decided yet. But I think the overall theme/feel is important. If you want a formal feel, then go with glass. A more casual feel, plastic could work. Be mindful that plastic is worse the the environment.

You wouldn't really be able to resell the plastic cups anyway. Those are going in the trash the second people are done with them. If you have any left over from what you purchase, I suppose you could save them and use them yourselves or try to sell them but that seems like a lot of hassle and it would probably be an odd number, not full packages.

If it's the same price as glass rental I'd absolutely go with glass.

What if we had rented glass, then purchased plastic for extra cups? I would think that by the time people drank their fill of wine and champagne they wouldn't care too much if their new cup was plastic. Perhaps then guest would be less likely to toss them and any extra cups we would def keep for future parties.

I think it depends on what kind of wedding you are having. I would say go w the glass if its the same price. We are having a relaxed BBQ wedding with a lot of DIY so for us the plastic would work. Some may call it tacky but your wedding is what you want...good luck

What is the question here? I mean glassware should always be preferred- if you arent having a BBQ, I think plastic is super tacky at a wedding. And the price is the same, so why debate it?

I just don't foresee people NOT tossing a plastic cup once they're done with it. I think you'd have a tough time policing that. And washing/reusing plastic cups after a party is a sticky smelly PITA. (I've tried it. lol.)

If you rent glassware, as long as there's a setup for a wash station, your catering company should be able to wash out glasses if extras are needed. I wouldn't pay for extra plastic cups.

I don't have a preference. i'm not there for the food and drinks lol i can't recall being at a wedding and having a strong opinion about the utensils and such. i couldn't tell you if they had either or. good grief.

do what you want and what you can afford.

@ Jamie D. If you're not asking rhetorically, I was just interested in what people think about having glass versus plastic, the pros and cons, and what's the better deal? I could have been not shopping around enough to find a better deal on plastic, but in my area it seems to be the same price.

@ krisalicious .. Ooh, seems like a huge hassle then. I'll ask the caterer if they can wash the glasses. We DID get extra glass glasses, but not being a wine expert myself, someone brought up the point of a guest who gets a white wine, will not want to use the same glass for a red. We're having an indoor buffet style, elegant dinner. So I'm leaning towards glass now since everyone is saying our style would be a def no no with plastic. However I was told with buffet style, people would expect a new glass every time they return to buffet.

What does everyone think about paper napkins instead of cloth? Or getting extra paper napkins for things like spills? I would dress up the paper napkins

I'll be using both glass & plastic. The glass will be for the champange toast & for the few wine drinkers & stylish plastics for everything else. I've changed my theme to a elegent backyad BBQ & thought it was fitting for our budget.

We're having a cocktail hour at our amazing outdoor ceremony site. There is no glass allowed so we'll have to use plastic, i was considering buying or renting reusable plastic cups that look more like real glasses but i think we'll just go with compostable plastic cups. I found some for $9 for a pack of 50 & that just seems so much easier than lugging dishes to & from our somewhat remote ceremony site to be used only for an hour. Reception will be at a restaurant, all real dishes that come with the rental.

I can't believe people are saying other people's weddings are tacky! so rude! I would only worry about the environmental effect- who cares if people think you're tacky!

Don't pay too much attention to the other comments. Family and true friends are not going to care whether it is glass or plastic. If they are that tacky to complain then maybe those individuals should not be invited. Sometimes people tend to forget the true reason you are gathering. I'm sure your wedding will be beautiful no matter what you do.

Agree!! if your wedding guest are that judgmental maybe they shouldn't be invited! I am purchasing hard plastic from www.webstaurantstore.com (which looks close enough to glassware). You have to work within your budget and not think about what others think Smiley smile
