Plastic glasses vs Real glasses

Chesty LaRue, on May 22, 2011 at 7:30 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 7

Originally I was going to order the reposable fancy glasses from smartyhadaparty.com However lately I have been considering buying glasses from dollar tree and reselling them after the wedding. There are pros and cons to each and Im not really sure what to do, especially since the catering will be done by my family. My cousin who is doing most of the cooking has done other weddings where she has used the fancy plastics before but my worry is the look and the dollar tree glasses are cheap. Here are my questions though (I have not been to a wedding in forever) Are the drinks from the bar (mixed drinks and such) in glass tumblers? Is beer poured in a glass or are the glass bottles used?

Has anybody been to an event with the fancier plastic glasses???

I'm using the fancier plastic glasses. I've done several dinner parties with those and the plastics and it's been great!

My only caution- they are like fake flowers. You don't want to mix them. The real glasses will make the plates look even plastic-er (grammer error anyone). I'd go with the plastic glasses just for cohesion.

As far as the drinks from the bar- it depends. Some venues do not allow glass beer bottles. Others could care less. If you're able to self cater, I think you'll have a choice. If you have a choice, I say use the bottles provided, and get plastic cups for mixed drinks. I'm not talking fancy-smancy plastic cups- but the small cocktail size plastic cups.

Use the famcy smancy cups for non-alcoholic beverages.

I am using some nice plastic ones (not the hard plastic though) and I am getting mine from either BJ's Warehouse or Sam's Club. I can get 300 for about $8.00.

Chuwana...The problem with buying and reselling glassware is transporting/mailing them. The weight and fragility will make it costly, and you may not recoup. Buy the time we priced it out, and because my FH is a total snob about what he drinks out of, we are renting.

For the table(dinner and toast), we are renting water goblets and flutes. For specific drinks, we have rented glass: martini, rocks, wine, martini and margarita.

For beer, we are using hard plastic. My FH doesn't drink beer. Ugg

We are using the hard plastic as well, we have a lot of drinkers and I don't want any broken glass because if anything happens to the venue we are responsible. I am getting mine from restaurant depot.

Personally, I would look into renting glasses, not buying some at dollar tree.

The rental company that I used, for my daughters wedding, charges 40 cents per glass for glassware, and $1 per stem for crystal.

We did not pay for glassware, nor use the hotel glassware. I work for a wine distributor and we also sell crystal. We have loaners, so I sent those, free of charge.

But, had we needed to get our own glassware, I would have rented, rather than use plastic. I prefer real glassware and I do not like the thought of throwing plastic in the trash.
