Plastic white tablecloths with real satin overlays?

irma, on November 2, 2013 at 1:05 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 5

Yay or nay??

Initially I was gonna make my own tablecloths but the fact that the tables are round makes that very complicated, not to mention time consuming and expensive (lots of fabric wasted due to corner cutting)

I found plain white plastic tablecloths at dollar store ($10 total) and I would make my own satin overlays since all I have to do is cut a square & hem the edges ($15-20 with coupon at Joaans)

Has anybody done this yet? Do you think it's tacky or fine (since the table will have satin on it) ?

Btw it's an evening winter wedding (Dec 19th)

I guess it depends on how crafty you are and if you can pull it off. Beautiful fabric can make anything beautiful. Be sure to show us pics!

I think having the satin will just bring attention to the fact that you have plastic tablecloths. You can keep your table decor more casual and *just* use plastic, but if you want it to be fancy, then you need a fabric tablecloth, too. Can you rent tablecloths, or find them used? Maybe your caterer can provide them? I think for an evening winter wedding, it would be better not to use the plastic at all, but no matter what, I think the main point is not to mix the materials.

I agree with Barbara, check a few local rental companies, I saw them here for about $2-3.00 each for rental. Also look at Craigslist and see if there are any for sale for cheap.

Idk... Mixing those two textures might be strange. Try a table mock up first to test that theory. You could always buy inexpensive used linens that someone is re selling from their wedding

Don't kill me I'm going to be brutally honest here. When I think plastic tableclothes I think about birthday parties ,bbqs or family reunions. You shouldn't mix the two together that screams cheap and tacky. Do one or the other! Now for what you spend on plastic tableclothes and fabric. You will end up spending more money. Example : Plastic tablecloths $10.00 , satin fabric somewhere around $7.99 a yard, thread and time (priceless) Depending on the size of table you will need a yard per table to make it look like a overlay. You can buy need linens for about $8.00 per table . Depending on the size of the table you can get away with the lap length linen and save as well. You can then able to resell after and get some of your money back.
