Platinum ring scratches

Jass, on April 12, 2011 at 4:25 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 13

Please someone tell me that the scratches on platinum ring will buff out and look as new! I've had this ring for almost a year, and I try my hardest not to dang it on things, but it's comfort fit, and it comes out more than regular fit rings. Please someone tell me it will look good again! We are going to take it to jeweler soon to have it inspected and hopefully buffed out.

Hi Jass! It will look better than new!! Unlike gold, when you polish platinum, it just fills in the gaps! I promise it will be shiny again!!

When you polish gold, it actually comes off and you have to have it redipped occassionally.

Thanks Michelle!! I thought I read that somewhere, but needed to confirm. Smiley smile

Have you had your ring checked yet? We thought about calling Bluenile and asking if they had a reference to a local jeweler in my area as I don't know where we would go. I would hate to part with my ring for a few days if I had to mail it in. It's my p-p-precious!

I would never mail it! I would take it to a reputable jeweler, like Jareds. They will give you a "receipt" for it. And it will probably cost $25-50? but I think it's worth it! I need to get mine done too. If you buy a ring at Jared's and get the warranty, I know it comes with lifetime polishing. Maybe they'd sell me a warranty for a ring I didn't buy there?

Yeah I should have clarified, I would NEVER mail it either! I would love to find a jeweler who could check it and buff it in front of me. lol We'll see.

That's good point about Jared, I'll look into that. But I think the closest one to me is about 45 minutes away.

You should just take it to a jeweler that works on jewelry there. Not someone who sends it off. And make sure they give you a receipt that shows what they are in posession of. I wouldn't except one that had a low balled estimated value of the ring, I made them write down from the cert: VVS1, F, etc.

Depends on the depth of the scratch. At Tiffany's, they hand polish the rings but they can send it out to New York to get a "deep polish" and fix deeper scratches.

Thanks Miya! I have some minor scratches, and one more noticable than others, but not deep I don't think.

They will be able to polish it out. when i sent my ring in to get sized it had horrible scratches on it from not fitting correctly and hitting things all the time. tiffanys did a deep polish for free at the same time and it looked like new!! so dont worry!

Do not take your platinum ring to Jared's. I got my platinum engagement ring 8 days ago. It was a little big so we stopped at Jared's to get a ring guard put on until I get my wedding bands and can have them sized all at the same time. The very young woman at the jewelery repair/polish count put the ring guard on my ring with needle nose pliers and put two huge dents/scratches in my ring! I would suggest an independent jewler, not a chain store.
