Hey there,

My fiancé and I are likely (visiting & booking are in the works) getting married outside on a beautiful property next summer. We want to have the reception at the same location, either outside or under a rented tent. It will be a small ceremony (35-50ish people) and a bigger reception (50-130 maximum).

We are relatively nontraditional and want to do things in a way that is us - not everyone else. We want the reception to be fun and engaging for our guests, so we plan to have music, games, and even s'mores and a bonfire later at night! We want to do a first dance and have music playing, but we want it to be on our own terms (lots of rock 'n roll and our favorite love songs; not typical country reception songs and line dances). Also, we aren't big dancers and neither are our guests!

Basically, we don't want a DJ. It would not be conducive to what we want and it is not worth the money, especially for our reception type. However, we do recognize that there are drawbacks. 1. No emcee. 2. Possible equipment search required. 3. More work to put together a playlist.

Has anyone done this before? How did you get someone to emcee/direct important events (dinner, dessert, first dance, etc.)?
What was your process like? We know it will be tough, but we want to be successful with this.

I love all the advice on this thread! I've been thinking about ditching the DJ and this is actually super helpful. I'm a professional musician, so I just know if anyone else picks the music I'm going to end up annoyed and I just don't want that. I think what I'm going to do is borrow equipment from some other musical friends, as well as use my own, and create specific playlists for certain times. I've been trying to think of a way to involve one of my best friends in my wedding since I can't have him in the wedding party and I think having him make announcements and take charge of the playlist (along with help from the wedding party) would be a great fit!

I would lose my mind!!! Why play whatever you want and not play what I wrote down? That's crazy.

Based on this post, I'm guessing your other post was deleted because it violated the community guidelines.

Yeah. I figured that out when I checked my email. They said it was removed because I basically originally said at the end, "If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all." They said saying that to someone else is censorship. 😏🤔
I only wanted to put it out there that someone saying they wouldn't want to be to my wedding is hurtful. 🤷‍♀️

I think your biggest challenge will be the equipment and delegating announcements. We aren't dancers either, but we're using premium Spotify and several playlists (including a more upbeat dance one for the guests who want to dance). I think if you can figure out the equipment/ announcements part it'll be fine. 🙂

I’ve asked a friend who’s already good at directing and commanding people’s attention to be our emcee. I haven’t completely squared away the equipment but I have two friends with exactly what I’m looking to borrow just figured I’d wait until we got through this COVID stuff. We’re not party people. I just want someone to announce the wedding party entrance, press play on our music and say what we’re doing. I’ve got the music picked for the most part.
