Please help! Printing save-the-date envelopes at home with Word

KarenO, on September 16, 2017 at 10:52 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I'm trying to print my save-the-date envelopes at home and am having problems. I am using Word and have an inkjet printer.

Anyway, I set the page size for the envelopes (they're 3 5/8 x 5 1/8) and felt like I set everything up correctly. The addressee prints OK, but the return address goes off the left side of the envelope. No matter how much I indent the return address (as part of the header), it still goes off the left side of the envelope. I also tried printing it on the back instead, but it looks off-center and the envelope flap gets messed up in the printer.

If I print them on an envelope-sized piece of paper, they print fine, so I'm guessing it's something with how the printer picks up the envelope itself.

Sorry for such a long post, but I am at a loss of how to fix this. Photos in next post (cont)

Also, ugh, why does it tell me that my post can only be 1000 characters when it says I still have like 30 left!

Anyway, photos of what I'm talking about attached. I'm using Word but can also try in Photoshop if that will work. My handwriting sucks and I really don't want to handwrite them all. You can see I printed them over and over in different colors and highlighted to see where things were actually printing.

Also, these are after I indented the return address far past the edge where I thought it should be; still prints to the left. Top is the template in Word; bottom is how they actually print.

    Thanks!

And, this is how it printed on a regular envelope-sized piece of folded paper before I started messing with the indentation of the return address.

Change your printer settings to special paper maybe. I spent a full day messing with envelopes before it printed perfectly. Such a pain in the ass.

ETA: we just bought returns labels for pretty cheap on zazzle.

We had the same problem. We just decided to print our return address on the back, and then handwrite the mailing address. For our invites, we had the return address printed on the back, and we used Avery (I think) labels for the mailing address. Highly recommend labels. They aren't expensive, and you can print a whole sheet of addresses at a time.

I have tried printing directly on the envelopes but always have trouble. I have resorted to clear labels. Saves a lot of time and aggravation!

Thanks, and, yes, it's probably the paper - I just realized after spending literally about 6-8 hours on this over the past couple weekends. (I could have written them out in the time I've spent.) I will see if my printer has a special paper setting.

And, maybe I'll just print labels or buy labels for the return address. These are just the save the dates, so I guess I shouldn't feel bad about labels for them.

You can purchase a stamp with your address on Etsy so you can stamp your address on your envelopes. You can reuse the stamp for your wedding invitation, holiday cards.

Much like you, I wasted ALOT of time. I used word to print mine and I had to adjust the settings in word and make sure it was set to the correct size envelope. After many pieces of paper and practice envelopes, I was finally able to get it to work! To save myself typing out our return address, I purchased an address stamper from Etsy. Worked like a charm. Mailed ours out after Labor Day. Hope you get the issue resolved! Good luck!

ETA: I also forgot to mention that after each envelope I printed, I had to make sure the settings didn't go back to default. It was a pain, but honestly, they looked really great when I was done.

I guess the main thing will be to find out what kind of paper will help it print correctly. I'll do more research on that, thanks! So far I've tried "specialty paper" and "HP note card" for paper type and still got the same result.

The actual wedding invites will be coming from my parents, and I likely will have addresses printed for those (we'll see once I see the cost), and I will be changing my name after we're married, so it feels like a waste to order a custom stamp just for this. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I got it to work! Thanks everyone for your advice.

I had to say it was HP Photo Plus paper, and lie about the size of the envelope, but the important thing is that it's working. My envelope is 5.125" and it told me that 6"-something was the minimum size. I just said OK and adjusted the mailing address to the left a bit.

It's all also slightly crooked, but at this point I don't care.

    Thanks again!

I used publisher instead of word and spent maybe 10 minutes making the necessary adjustments. It uses text boxes instead of messing with headers.

I created mine on the Avery site and printed on my card stock. They have lots of sizes to choose from.
