I am not a huge fan of diamonds for a few reasons. I'm also a pretty non-traditional person when it comes to my preferences. I love to see non-traditional wedding and engagement rings. Chris has not formally proposed yet but he has ordered and engagement and wedding ring said that I am in love with. It is handmade and won't get here for a few weeks yet and then he will propose when he's ready but I wanted to get planning started since we are planning for next October. Here is my beautiful Moss Agate ring. I'd love to see your non-traditional rings. cfb_1498806.jpg

We'll, the flower is pretty big so I was afraid I'd hit something and break it at first, but apparently it's almost impossible. Other than than no special care needed, it just needs to be professionally cleaned once a year like any other ring.

    That ring set is gorgeous!

There are reasons why diamonds are ideal and used for jewelry that will be worn everyday though - they are super hard and not prone to scratching or chipping. Many other gemstones are just as (or more) beautiful and unique in my opinion, but some of those will damage more easily and not wear as well so aren't suited for wearing daily. Jewelers use the Moh's scale, which is exponential, to measure gemstone hardness, and most recommend that an engagement ring is at least a 7-7.5 on the Moh's scale.

I could try to explain it in my own words, but its probably better coming from an expert: https://www.abbysparks.com/blog/hard-truth-trendy-engagement-rings/

    https://www.doamore.com/5-gemstone-engagement-rings-to-avoid-what-to-buy/#:~:text=So%2C%20when%20choosing%20a%20gemstone,durable%20your%20ring%20will%20be.

Diamonds are a 10, but there are other common gemstones, such sapphires and rubies (9 on the Moh's scale) that make ideal engagement ring alternative for someone wanting a natural precious gemstone that is less traditional. I personally love morganite (typically a 7.5-8), which is a trendy alternative gemstone for engagement rings right now. If you plan on wearing your ring infrequently, you can absolutely get away with a softer stone, but agate, which is 6.5-7 on the Moh's scale, is probably too soft for everyday use. Definitely not trying to bum you out because that ring set is absolutely stunning, but its important you know the limitations!

My own ring is a gray celestial diamond flanked by white sapphires and set in rose gold. I pretty much only wear it for special occasions or "going out" though because my everyday job and hobbies are super hands on, so I stick with an inexpensive silicone ring for day to day use. I love that my ring is unique and has character and isn't the the traditional crystal clear solitaire style diamond.
