Plural of last name looks wrong! Do it grammatically incorrect instead?

Lindsey, on April 19, 2021 at 7:51 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 12
We’re working on making the big welcome sign when I realized what is the correct plural of Jones?! It’s Joneses - which to me looks really weird and not correct even though it is. I feel like our guests will think the same, everyone who I’ve asked to test my theory thinks Jones’ is the correct plural so I’m considering just doing it that way even though it’s not “technically” grammatically correct. Thoughts?

I googled it, apparently it is Joneses - using the apostrophe at the end is incorrect

I thought it was Jones' as well!!

The apostrophe would be the possessive - so if you husband owns a house it would be Mr. Jones' house, but if you own the house together it would be The Joneses' house making it plural and possessive - so confusing!

Honestly if it said The Jones' wedding I would be like ok cool and be none the wiser.

The plural and possessive of words are two different things. For all words, the plural either ends in an s or es. The apostrophe only comes into play if you’re talking about possession (I.e. the Jones’ home).

Like Sarah said, Joneses is correct! The Apostrophe is used when using it in a possessive way!

If you don't like the correct plural Joneses, I would just use a different wording. You could do welcome to the wedding of Lindsey and Fiancé Jones.

The wedding of Lindsey and Fiancé
    The Jones Wedding

On most of our wedding decor including the welcome sign, I only used our first names.

We will be the Trucksesses and NOPE I won't ever write that even though it is technically right and we are avoiding it when we can, and using Trucksess' if we need to haha. Trucksesses looks and sounds ridiculous lol

My new last name will also end in an S so I feel your pain on the awkward plural! Personally, I'd stick with what is grammatically correct. I'd be that guest who if you wrote Jones', would notice that it was incorrect.

I would do it grammatically correct. If you really hate it, then I would just do as another poster suggested and re-do the wording so that it doesn't need to be plural.

Came here to say this! WHY would you be wrong on purpose?? Just say "The Jones Family" or Mr. & Mrs. Jones.

I'll say it: I judge people and think less of them if they can't work their own names.

I just have to say this one made me laugh on your behalf LOL. Not at your expense, but just because I can only imagine your frustration LOL. But hey if you were playing Wheel of Fortune you’d be rich from those S’s 😂

Because it’s just not that serious in my opinion for this particular situation! My fiancé and I, as well as our family, are very laid back people. We aren’t stuck up, don’t over analyze tiny details, and certainly don’t think less of people for something so insignificant. But each to their own!

"Keeping up with the Joneses" is a very common expression so a lot of people may be familiar with that pluralization. PS - #KeepUpWithTheJoneses would be a fun wedding hashtag.
