Popular vs Uncommon First Dance Songs

Jillian, on October 6, 2016 at 7:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

Just curious if the popularity of a song has swayed you from using it for your first dance? We love "Then" by Brad Paisley and have loved it for years, seen him play it in concert, etc, BUT I feel like SO many people use that song that it might be overplayed at weddings. I also like "The Only One That Gets Me" by Charles Kelley because of its lyrics/meaning but it is a lot less known. We also like "From The Ground Up" by Dan & Shay but I feel like that one is getting really popular too. What do you guys think? Do you feel like you should sway away from super popular wedding songs because of them being overdone?

If you love a song, who cares if other people have used it? I think it is more important what the song means to your relationship.

I don't think you should chose a song because it is popular, but you shouldn't NOT use the song because it is popular, either.

You shouldn't exclude and song just because they are popular. Just pick a song that actually mean something to you and FH!

We purposely avoided extremely popular songs (and ended up choosing one that has a lot of personal meaning but isn't on any suggestion lists anywhere), but it's totally a personal preference. If you love the songs you mentioned, go for it! Songs become popular for a reason--they're excellent choices.

Yes, this was a consideration for us. It wasn't so much whether or not it was popular first-dance song, but more "is this a trendy first-dance song?" We'd rather go with a little-known or popular classic song instead of something that will be dated in 5-10 years.

We just went with the song that's been "our song" the whole relationship. It's semi popular but even if it was or wasn't, I'd still use it since it's "ours".

Yeah me and FH are not into trendy songs. We're having a hard time coming up with a song for us and even entrance songs into the reception for the bridal party and for us as a couple.

I want to have those moments in the future where we're out and hear our song. For that reason I did not go with something too obscure.

We used a very popular song, and did Thinking Out Loud. I liked it before it was overplayed. And whatever, I'm a basic bitch, so who cares!

Ours isn't super popular, but it's played on the radio quite a bit. We chose "Like I'm Going To Lose You" by Meghan Trainor and John Legend while we were listening to the radio. I personally like knowing that we could possibly hear our song on the radio and be reminded of our special day, but I know not everyone is of that mindset. I actually did decide against having the bridal party process in to Pachelbel's Canon in D because it's overdone. I don't want to do anything that's been done a million times and has no special meaning to us, but I won't rule a song out because it's Top 40.

Pick something that will help you make a happy, lasting memory....don't worry so much about what other people listen or dance to.

Future hubby and I are dancing to "The truth is" by Go Radio.... it's nontraditional but it's been our song for our relationship. I cry every time I listen to it now.

@Ang it's ok, I'm a basic bitch too. We're going with Tenerife Sea by Ed Sheeran. Just pick what you like instead of worrying about other couples dancing to it. If it's popular, it usually means it's a good song.

If a song means something to you both, then that's all that should matter. Regardless if it's played on the radio all the time or not. If you're struggling with which song to choose, we always suggest considering a song from a movie or TV show you loved. Wedding themed movies usually have great soundtracks that offer lot's of music options, both popular songs and less obvious ones too.

Congrats and have an awesome wedding day.
