Porta Potty at Wedding?

FH and I found our location a beautiful little bridge that we just adore. Problem? No bathroom anywhere near by. So obviously our only option is to rent some sort of potty. We are on a pretty limited budget for the wedding, fortunately we saved a ton when we found out our venue is free. However it seems that potties are incredibly pricey (at least in our area) especially the nicer you go. Since our wedding is so small (maybe 40 people) we didn't see the need in renting a fancy(ish) potty trailer since the cheapest we have found are well over $1,000! Would it be tacky just to get a regular potty? We know our guest pretty well and they aren't the type to turn their nose up to this kind of thing. Should we rent a potty with the sink inside or a separate portable sink. I don't like Porta Potties as is much less the thought of using the sink inside one even though I know it will be fresh when we get it. I think people would feel more comfortable with the separate sink right?

If you can't afford the nicer trailers then I don't think this is an appropriate location for your ceremony and reception. You should look for an indoor venue with proper washrooms and sufficient power. No one wants to use those porta potties.

You do need power for the trailer restrooms as well as flat ground. Its not, like the porta potty is going to be filled up from previous events. It will be empty and clean when you receive it. We have rented a lot of regular ones for backyard parties through out the year. Idk I grew up camping and using actually outhouse when we went on a rustic campground. That stuff doesn't bother me. Its a know, your crowd type of thing. I know people who would be caught dead sleeping in a tent or a camper for that matter and others who love it. Eta: also, with 40 people,i don't see the smell being a issue. The porta potties you go in that smell are because they haven't been emptied in a very long time. A empty one comes with the liquid in the bottom to deter smell. I think when people think porta potties they imagine ones a concerts that thousands of people use in the baking hot sun. This is not the same at all. Honestly I doubt there will be any smell unless you go in right after uncle Joe who blew it up lol

This is a mistake. I understand the nice ones are expensive, but weddings, in general, are expensive. There are certain things you just don't skimp on -- bathrooms is at the top of the list, along with food and drinks. You got your venue for free. Congrats! Most people pay several thousand for their venue. You saved that money. Unfortunately, that means you now have to spend it on facilities.

Also, a tent may not be sufficient for bad weather, especially in October when it can be cold in certain areas of the country. You really need an indoor backup.

Ew. I use porta potties at bonnaroo and that's about it. I'd leave. Sounds like you've already made up your mind though. So if you're going with them, get the ones that flush.

Chaos05 I really wish we could but currently FH is suffering from a serious back injury and we are on a pretty limited income because of it. I work and he now barely brings in anything because of Jones Act. -.- most annoying unhelpful workers comp law in history... On top of all that we are in the middle of a serious lawsuit with the company he got injured at so it kinda puts a damper on things when we have to travel several hundred miles frequently every month to deal with all of it. Makes saving for a wedding pretty tight.

Fortunately the area we live in is relatively warm still in October so we didn't really think that it would be an issue, but we did look into potentially using heated tents if the weather got to inclement. If it is any consolation we did plan on getting the ones that flush and had plans to rent separate hand washing stations because I just can't imagine using the sink in a potty. Regardless if it fresh or not.

After reading all the replies, I'm convinced you are asking the wrong crowd. These are brides who are thinking about their "perfect day" through their own lens. Ask a few of your guests. Get a sense of what they think. They should just be there to celebrate you. If their aversion to a regular, clean porta potty trumps their love for you, they shouldn't be on your guest list. My FH agrees.

Rent the trailer. No one wants to go into a gross, smelly porta potty in formal wear. You got your venue for free, there's no excuse.

Yeah remember you'll have to use them in your dress too! Is that something you want to risk?

@PrivateUser, your guests attending to celebrate your union. They are spending time and money show their love and care for you. That should be reciprocated. You should be showing that same love and care to them, and that involves actually caring about their comfort.

I can't imagine peeing in a portapotty while wearing heels. I hate peeing in them on regular occasions when I'm not getting even dressed up. If that is your only option then it is better than nothing but it isn't ideal.

Think of it this way...if your venue is free use the money you would have used on the venue for the toilets.

You are going to pay to tent the cheap porta potties, but you won't just save and pay for the nice trailer instead? That makes no sense to me. You should cut other places and get the nice trailer bathrooms.

I have a huge problem using them when I am apple picking upstate after driving 2 hours each way and spending 3-5 hours getting dirty and climbing trees with jeans and boots on. I can't imagine being ok with using them in wedding attire - sundress/sandals or gown and stilettos. Either way, I would be very unhappy that a yucky portapotty was my only option after having a couple drinks. I'd probably be happier peeing behind a bush.

@PrivateUser your post is why we tell new users to lurk before contributing. You're wrong. Her loved ones will tell her it's fine, but then they'll bitch behind her back or come here when planning their own weddings to post to the "worst wedding you attended" thread.

@TugBride I understand that finances are difficult right now, but how are you affording a tent with heaters and can't shell out the money for bathrooms? Forgive me for saying this, but perhaps you should postpone the wedding for a year so you can save up the extra $1000? Alternatively, find a different venue. When you consider the heated tents and the bathrooms (even the cheap ones), you're really not saving any money. You can get married at a public library, art museum, or hotel ballroom for the same price you're paying for that tent. Plus, you're going to spend a fortune on linens and utensils when it's not included in venue price.

It's crazy to me people are suggesting to post pone the wedding over a toilet LOL! If it was she couldn't afford food that's one thing. It's a CLEAN empty porta potty. This is definitely the wrong crowd to ask OP. And if people say your wedding is the worst wedding ever over it they shouldn't be on the invite. eTA: everyone does realize the fancy trailers are still a porta potty with paint and decorations on the wall right? They are actually smaller than a standard one and have the SAME toilet in them.

We have family that already have the tents (sorry for not mentioning that totally understand the confusion!) We also don't have to worry about tables or chairs because his family has all that too. We are borrowing almost everything we are using for the wedding. We are only really paying for our clothes (buying second hand - renting not buying his suit), flowers (less than $300), food, and a photographer (which we have on a payment plan - less than $1,500). We are trying to save every penny we can.

All it takes is one or two people with GI issues to make a "clean" porta-potty into something disgusting.

I'm a runner, so unfortunately I've used some in my time. I hate them. They're gross. I don't like looking at and smelling other people's poop.

I'd either not use it or I'd leave early.

Just FYI, it's usually cheaper to buy a suit, especially if you go to Macy's or Penny's during a sale with a coupon. We just got FH and the GMs suits for $137 at Macy's.

But I don't think bathrooms are a place to skimp on. People will talk, and it won't be good. You may not ever hear it, but it will happen.
