Post-wedding reception ideas

Kendra, on May 28, 2018 at 5:36 PM Posted in Married Life 0 4
Hello!
My husband and I technically got married on March 2nd of this year but are planning a reception for March 2nd, 2019 - exactly a year later. I thought I wanted just the courthouse wedding but the only thing missing that day was celebrating with our families so we decided to go for it.

Being that’s it’s a reception only, I’m not sure the flow and format of the evening. We don’t really need to introduce a bridal party other than just the two of us I guess so I’m not sure how we would kick it off. I would also like to do a few short speeches as well. Obviously this isn’t the traditional format so I’m just looking for tips.

Thanks! ☺️

We're in a similar situation and I've struggled with how to "start" things also! Ours is a Friday so we're having a cocktail hour (I figured people may trickle in as they may be coming right from work). If the weather cooperates cocktail hour will be outside and then we'll move inside for dinner so there will be an announcement by the DJ. Once people are seated, we'll come in, give a short "thank you for being here" speech and continue as normal. Ours is a family only DW so we may play our video, but not sure how/when to make that work.

Hi Kendra! Welcome to the WeddingWire Community! Smiley ring Typically, most couples follow the format of introducing the bridal party, participating in the father-daughter/mother-son dances, toasts, cocktail hour, and an open dance floor segment for guests. However, you're entirely free to plan your reception whichever way you please. If you want to forgo an intro, say a speech, and have a less traditional format then go for it! Sounds fun! Good luck!

My future step brother in law did this with his wife. They went to Jamaica, got married just them, and had a reception a couple months later at home. It was in a hotel in a ballroom. Everyone showed up around 5:00 PM and sat down, and the DJ introduced the bride & groom. They had their first dance, mother son dance, and father daughter dance. The parents gave short speeches and so did the groom. They had a buffet dinner, and a cash bar, then dessert. She had some minor decor (welcome sign, centerpieces) and wore her wedding dress. They had a photographer and had favors too! It seemed to flow really well.
