Postcards

I’m sending my Save the Dates as postcards! I love the idea of it being a little more casual and just something guests can stick on the fridge. Anyone else done this and can offer some advice?

I’ll be mailing around 50 of them? What’s the best way to do this? Take them to the counter at my local post office? I’ve heard talk of “hand canceling”... what’s that?

That’s what we did for our save the dates. We just took them to the counter. The hand cancel is where a person does the work and it never touches a machine to stamp the stamp. It’s not needed for a postcard we didn’t do it for any of our paper goods but it you have really fancy invites with wax seals or lace paper and don’t want anything to get damaged it’s a good idea But not needed for these.

Postcards are great, with or without a printed picture. O like simple. I have hated the trend of magnets, and other printed do dads from fake mini chalk boards to little address book kinds of notices. Our fridge and kitchen stuff is glass or wood, magnets do not stick. And with dogs and children, anything that will make a kid or animal sick if chewed must go on read high up bulletin boards. Not left in reach for months. Tired of cutesy stuff that has to be copied on a small card and posted, while the magnet/ dodad goes in the trash immediately. Simple is best!
As the last poster said, hand cancelling is not necessary for postcards.

A postcard is a great idea. Hand cancelling is not necessary but you can ask them.

Postcards are cute, but can get damaged in transit since there’s no envelope to shield it from rain, tears or smudges. Just something to keep in mind.

I used postcards and it was a bit of hit and miss. I dropped them off at the counter and they hand canceled them for me since they weren't busy, but the postcards still went through the machines! This resulted in some of them getting smeared or damaged. Some guests called and asked what the card said because it was too smudged!

Still make sure you put your return address, too! Some got lost in the mail and made their way back to us. We would've never known those people didn't receive it. We sent new postcards to them (purchase a few extra!), but just dropped them off in the regular mailbox since they go through the machine regardless.

Next, several people lost our save the dates after getting them. I think people just set them down wherever and misplaced them. Cue more calls weeks later reasking the date. Since we had to reschedule our wedding for next summer, I'm going to bite the bullet for magnets and regular postage this time. I think that works better for Millenials and Gen Z. Other guests can hole punch or staple them and place them elsewhere if they don't want it on the fridge. I hope your mailing goes much smoother!

My fiance and I have just ordered our save the dates officially, and we decided to go with postcards. Obviously I cannot speak much on experience as we have only just ordered them, but I personally felt it was the best option. People tend to misplace cards. Magnets are cute, but not everyone would put them on a fridge, so I thought it was a bit wasteful of money. As mentioned above multiple times, hand cancelling is not necessary for postcards.

We did magnet save the dates for our original ones, but since we postponed we sent out really cute postcards for our postponed date. The only thing that I was a little disappointed about (but someone expected), the post cards didn’t look that great once they went through the mail.
