Postponed wedding- Do i need to preserve my dress until my new date?

Suzanne, on May 27, 2020 at 8:20 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

I bought my dress off the rack December 2019 for my wedding that was scheduled for July 2020. Well, the whole Covid thing happened and we've postponed until July 2021.

My dress is hanging in its bag in my closet. Will it be ok until the wedding, or should I get it preserved until next year? Should I check on it or open the bag every few months to air it out or check it to make sure it's not staining? I haven't gotten it altered yet, but I'll do that next spring or summer. I tried looking online but I couldn't find anything about needing (or not needing) dress preservation for wedding postponement. Thanks for the help!

It should be fine! I bought mine January 2019 and it came in the end of that same month, I had it hanging in the bag in my closet since and literally just started alterations last week. So in total it was in that same spot for about a year and a half. Everything was fine with it! No smell, discoloration or anything.

I had mine in a garment bag in a dark closet for over a year. I took it out a few times just to look at it, but it should be fine.

I was engaged 9 years ago and the dress still looks new. I think you will be fine!

Is the bag plastic or fabric? If it’s fabric, you should be fine, although I would be tempted to lay it flat on or under a bed if you can.

It should be fine as long as it isn't bent/folded and isn't in plastic. Definitely find a fabric garment bag instead of plastic. Otherwise it should be fine!

Just make sure it is in a garment bag (no plastic!) and out of direct sunlight. It should be just fine.
