Postponement & Replanning Part 2

Mrs.a, on January 27, 2021 at 7:47 AM Posted in Planning 0 19

Hi lovely Brides and Grooms to be!

I was wondering how many of you have postponed or are postponing your date 1-2 times over since last year?

To give a little backstory, we had a minimony in October of 2020 so we are officially married, but we want very much to celebrate with our friends and family who did not witness our marriage. We had postponed until May 2021 last summer thinking we would have a handle on things until then...it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be that way so we are now postponing until October 2021 and having a vow renewal with our celebration.

So far, we had to pay a new deposit and sign a new contract with one of our venues (which was not the case when we rescheduled last year)...bummer. However after listening to one wedding planner’s IG Live recording, this seems to be the new “norm” and standard for many vendors and venues. Thankfully the rest of our vendors have been flexible with rescheduling and reserving our deposits for the new date.

What sort of things are you encountering in rescheduling/postponing your big day? Are you running into any hurdles? I’d love to hear how your plans have changed as well!

Sorry that you had to postpone again! Though it's a relief that your vendors have been accommodating for you. The vow renewal near your one-year anniversary sounds like a great idea!

My fiance and I postponed from July 2020 to July 2022. We had to sign new contracts (though did not have to pay any new deposits) with our venue and vendors, who have all been great and worked with us to reschedule. I do feel lucky that we didn't lose any deposits from postponing, though we still had the costs of sending out postponement announcements (we didn't know our new date at the time we postponed) and ordering Change The Date cards for us to send this summer, as well as all the changes/upgrades we decided to make for our wedding (turns out, having too much time to plan can be bad for the budget 😬). We're now just waiting it out until time gets closer, then we'll pick up planning again.

Oh no! What a bummer. We decided to completely cancel having a reception. Too many of our loved ones have selective/inconsistent fear of COVID.

My husband and I are in the same exact position. We had a minimony as well in October 2020 and our big wedding was scheduled for March 2021 which ended up being cancelled by the venue. Now we are also planning for October 2021 in hopes that it can actually go through. We're going to see a new possible venue next Wednesday, but we pretty much had to start from scratch except our DJ and photographer. Our last venue was all inclusive so that included the linens, China, caterer, bartender, DOC etc. so pretty much trying to plan a vow renewal in less than 10 months now.

We changed plans 5 times before coming to our current plan. We ended up getting married last September on our 3 year anniversary and plan to have a reception only this November. We were very fortunate in that all of our vendors were able to move our date multiple times and that they were all available for this final date (it's the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so I think that helped us). However, we were told that if we move dates again, we will need to pay a rescheduling fee. This is null for us, because if we aren't able to hold our reception as planned this fall, we're just going to forfeit moneys paid and move on with our lives.

I’m so glad to hear your vendors and venue were able to transfer your deposits! That’s such a relief. More time does mean more opportunities to spend lol but it also gives more time to save so there’s that aspect of it at leas Smiley winking

I’m just hoping things will be better and that most people will be able to have the vaccine before October. I’m sure by 2022 we’ll be in the clear...Here’s hoping! 🤞

That’s completely understandable. When we had our minimony we opted to not have dinner or a reception afterwards because we didn’t want to put anyone at risk.

Awe girl! It’s a lot to just change plans, yet alone find a new venue. We booked a new venue for the ceremony last time we rescheduled and it is a little stressful. I hope it all works out for you Smiley smile

Yeah, my husband said that if we can’t have it in October that he wants to cancel. It’s a lot of time and money though we’ve invested so far, and I really want to be able to celebrate with friends and family, especially coming out of this pandemic.

We have just postponed for the second time 🤦🏼‍♀️ Originally November 2020 rescheduled to November 2021 and now re-rescheduled to November 2022. We have definitely been super lucky with our vendors- most of them have agreed to reschedule for the second time with no up charges, additional fees, requiring us to pay their new raised rates, etc. The 2 exceptions were one of our cake bakers- she will not sign a new contract more than a year out, so we will have to get back ahold of her in this Fall to sign a new contract; and the make up artist. Since rescheduling took our wedding from a Thursday to a Friday, they now consider that a weekend which requires a minimum of 6 people receiving make up services for them to book. There will only be 4 ladies getting makeup done, so I made the decision to just forfeit the $200 deposit and find someone else. As luck would have it, I actually have a friend who lives in NOLA and does make up for huge fashion shoots and TV shows/movies and she has agreed to do our make up for us! So really, that situation was a blessing in disguise! Now it’s just a matter of trying to wait patiently for the day to finally arrive!

I absolutely hear that. We’ll be losing out on some thousands if we cancel since we were only 3 weeks out from the original date when we first postponed, so most everything was already paid for, but I just can’t find the enjoyment in an event so far away from our marriage day.

I feel you girl! Our original wedding date was July 2020. We did the small backyard wedding with just our immediate families and pushed our reception to April 2021, thinking things would be better by now. Well the last week or so we decided to cancel the reception and not reschedule. It sucks, but we're tired of putting our lives on hold just to throw a party. 80% of our vendors were great about it and gave us most of our money back. We're still fighting with 2 vendors though and that has been super stressful.

I’m surprised they were willing to refund you. Most retainers are non refundable.

Yeah, I’ve taken a huge step back from wedding planning since mostly everything was planned and focusing on other things at the moment. I’m hoping that by the time October rolls around I’ll be just as excited and able to enjoy it!

It's been a mix and I guess it just depends on the vendor. We got lucky with a few that were willing to give everything back. Some just kept our retainer and 2 kept everything. Definitely a stressful time for all brides, but you just have to trust your gut. Whatever you end up doing will be beautiful and something special/unique to tell people in the years to come.

I am not sure if I would use the word “patiently“ 😂
I think things will (hopefully!) be much better this Fall. And if we were having a local wedding we definitely would have stuck to our date this year! But, since we are having a DW, we are heavily reliant upon businesses being open and “back to normal“ for us and guests to have the type of experiences we wanted; and I just don’t see that happening this year. So this is our last attempt to have our ideal wedding. If things aren’t better by next Fall, we are moving forward with the wedding regardless (even if that means just the two of us eloping).
