Postponement & Weight Loss

Lisa, on July 21, 2020 at 9:21 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 1 19
So now that we have extra time before our wedding, Oct. 2021, I’m hoping to be more motivated to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle. Not just between now and then but moving forward.

We have a Peloton, which is awesome. But ever since we postponed I lost the motivation to work out and have been eating not so great.
What are you doing to become more active, eat & heathy? I’m hoping to lose 40-45 pounds between now and early next year then start focusing on toning. This would put me close to my overall goal weight and still be able to take in my ballgown for the big day.
I’ve struggled with my weight since high school where I was a very active.
Any advise or words of wisdom is appropriated!!

For me I need to plan it out on my calendar and see it, my schedule at work fluctuates sometimes I'm off at 5 others 6. I find it easier to stick to my workouts if I make time for them. Also helps me keep my sanity as well lol

I'm in the same boat! I gained weight during quarantine and don't fit my dress anymore. So one of the pluses of postponing to 2021 is that we have more time to lose that quarantine weight.

I downloaded an app called Lose It! that tracks everything I eat, my exercise. There are other apps too, I just like Lose It! the most. I also track my water intake on there, I've been drinking at least 64 oz of water per day. I've been eating sooo many fruits and veggies. I've cut back on coffee. Apple cider vinegar is supposed to boost your metabolism. So I've been drinking a mixture of 1/2 cup cranberry juice, 1/2 cup water, 2 tbsp ACV and I squeeze lime or lemon juice in it. It give me a little boost of morning energy too! Lemon water is great, my tailor told me putting some mint in there will also help with water weight. I love sweets. So when I crave sweets, I try to eat fruit instead, sometimes I mix them with greek yogurt. Lots of walking my dog! Our destination has been these Little Free Libraries (if you're a reader, look it up!). So I pick up a book and it's like I get a reward out of it! FH and I have also been hiking here and there.
Good luck to you! You're going to look beautiful no matter what.

Use an app to help you like Lose it or my fitness pal. - They will help keep you accountable I love Lose it and have used both over the years. Also, start easy, cut back on processed foods and carbs along with reduction in sugar. Once you do that the rest will fall into place.

    Good luck, you've got this.

I think you just need to remember WHY you want to do this....not just for your wedding but to live a happy and healthier life! Diet is the most important aspect of weight loss so start to limit the take out, fried foods, calorie dense drinks and track your calories. From there try to incorporate some physical activity slowly.

I have been trying to lose weight but it won't budge. I'm trying to swap out those take out meals and choose to eat at home instead!

It was so wonderful to hear you say that you want lose weight and get healthier in general and not just for the wedding. I know everything is a personal decision and this is totally wrong of me.... but it drives me bonkers when brides have these “sweating for the wedding” shirts as if the wedding is the only reason to get healthy.

I love working out and running. Surprisingly, quarantine and working from home these months has allowed me to workout more because I can just stop and do sets of push-ups, planks, squats, burpees, etc. at any point (which I can’t do while in the office 😆).
It might help if you set an alarm that reminds you when to workout. Also be mindful of your food choices and quantities, especially in comparison to the calories you burn via exercise. That’s where apps, like PP mentioned can be helpful. If you need both an app and more support, Weight Watchers is a great, easy and effective option. Another good thing is to find the type of workouts you enjoy and then find success in each little improvement to stay motivated. Although it’s popular, I’m not a Zumba or Barre fitness type of girl. I prefer short distance running (2 to 3 miles), love doing full body strength training to stay toned (not bulky) and other cardio like kickboxing, TRX or boot camp styles. But the type of workout is a personal preference and if you get stuck doing something that you don’t like, that will quickly cause you to stop altogether. Also keep in mind that no one gains 40-50 lbs overnight. So it’s not going to be lost overnight either. Patience is necessary. Best wishes and you can do it!

My FH and I are the same way. We decided it was really time to buckle down and hire a trainer. We just started earlier this month and she's wonderful. It's a but upsetting (our fault) because we've kind of strayed off the meal plans a few times but we're heading back in the right direction.

I use Lose It! too! It works great! I've lost 50 pounds on it. I go by the rule "If you hog it, log it" Basically if you put it in your mouth make sure you lock it no matter how small it is! It helps me to really stop and think before I eat something. Just make sure that your intentions are on reaching a healthy body weight or living a healthier lifestyle! I realized that if thought about I need to lose weight for an event after the event I gain it back.

This is what my FH is doing. He bought a regular 'ol calendar and posted it on the wall. He writes down his day and it seems to help him with accountability.

I've used Lose It! in the past! Seems to work, as long as a log things! Water is definitely a key factor, I drink tons already. Maybe I'll try to drink a little more. I've heard great things about ACV, I'll have to give it a try!

Thanks so much - you will too!!

I redownloaded My Fitness Pal right after I posted this! They really help. We want to try to cut cards most days and have just a cheat meal once a week. Thanks so much!

Yes! I think this is super important! It's for more than just a day. I want to be healthy when we try to start a family. Diet is super important so I'm going to try and focus on that first.

FH and I are in the same boat! We just postpone the big celebration part of our wedding and I lost my motivation LOL I know the struggle! I'm glad that you have outside motives other than losing weight just for the wedding. I think that will help too! For an example, I started dancing again to lose the weight that I gained from being on birth control and eating terribly. My ultimate goal is to be stronger. I liked it when I was "small" and could lift a 250 lb man LOL I think having an exterior goal outside of just the wedding will help. Also baby steps. It takes 21 days to form a new habit and 90 days to form it into a lifestyle choice! So you've got this!! You can do this!!

I decided to get healthier too because I’m sick of the way I look in general. I’ve used weight watchers in the past so I figured I’d try them again, although I haven’t really seen many results from their new programs so I might switch it up. Another thing I do is intermittent fasting on a 16/8 schedule. This means you fast for 16 hours and only allow yourself to eat within the 8 hours you choose. I do 11 am to 7 pm. I know you said you have a peloton, but maybe try other workouts? I have an elliptical and I just get so sick of doing it so I started looking up at home workout videos. I found this group, Team Body Project, and they have a TON of different exercises that are actually fun to do. I’m going on my 5th week of working out with them.

Motivation can easily be the most difficult part of getting in shape. So many people don't have the willpower to stick with exercising, or even get started in the first place. I know this from personal experience, because I struggled with my weight for the better part of my life. I only recently started to take my health seriously, and surrounding myself with other healthy people helped keep me on track. Another thing that helped me a ton was/are motivational quotes. I am a spiritual person, and quotes have always meant a lot to me, so I took some of these quotes, printed them out, and put them up around my house to remind me to stick with it: https://www.openfit.com/20-motivational-quotes-to-help-you-reach-your-fitness-goals

You mentioned that you have a Peloton, which is great because one of the coolest features of their bikes is that there are classes that you can take, which replicate those that you would take in a gym. Having someone yelling at me to keep going, and also having to keep myself honest with my scores, is super helpful, whether that's in person or through a screen. I prefer home workouts much more than classes at gyms for many reasons, but none more than the cost-effectiveness. Buying equipment once, that you can use forever, is so much cheaper than paying monthly fees to basically rent out equipment. Here are some of the other reasons that home gyms are so great: https://www.openfit.com/9-reasons-working-out-at-home-is-better

As unfortunate as the postponement might be, at least you have extra time to finally get in shape and start your journey to lifelong health. This journey is a forever journey, and you will learn so many different ways to workout and exercise along the way. Finding what works for you is the most important thing, because doing what you enjoy will make you want to do it more. Here are some "non-conventional" ways to exercise that might be a little more enjoyable:

I just try to remember that now that I have extra time I want to look extra good! I have a peloton too! It’s the best! Remember why you are doing it and also set small goal like “run a mile without stopping”, not drink soda for 1 week, little things that will add up over time!

I've been working out and eating within a daily calorie allotment. It's been good so far but I'm planning to step it up a bit. As long as you are doing at least a walk everyday, and eating a low carb balanced diet, you will lose weight.
