Posture Improvement - Suggestions!?

Ashley, on November 6, 2016 at 9:35 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 13

Any recommendations for improving posture?

Both my fiancee and I have worked in office jobs for the last few years. Even with an emphasis on ergonomics, we tend to naturally slightly hunch over with our heads forward when standing. Needless to say, I would like us to look our best for our big day! Luckily, our wedding isn't until April 2017 so there is plenty of time for improvement.

I have searched the forums but was not able to find anything specifically for posture improvement.

Does anyone else have similar concerns of poor posture affecting how you and your SO look during the wedding (and in pictures)? Any recommendations on the best way to improve posture?

Practice? I'd just try be to mindful of standing up straight Smiley smile Do you slouch less when you wear a certain type of shoe (flats, wedges, heels)?

You can also ask your photographer and bridesmaids to subtly remind you to straighten up!

I sit on an exercise ball instead of a chair at work. It's still possible to slouch, but it's much harder. (Plus bouncing at work is just fun.)

Do core exercises. Try and get a chair that tilts you forward so you have to engage your core. Also, when you walk, keep your core engaged. Take dance conditioning, or pilates classes, both will help your posture.

You could also let your photographer know this is a concern of yours so they are aware that they should correct you during portraits.

I had back pain for a few years so I wear a back brace. It does help with posture!

    Dance classes help too!

For your wedding pictures, let you photographer know your concern so he/she can remind you!

Yoga. I have back problems and yoga, even every once in a while, helps me to lengthen

I am a huge fan of barre classes. They're expensive so I'm waiting until I get closer to wedding time but it was the best core exercise that I actually noticed was leading me to stand up straight!

I used to have excellent posture from years of ballet...then I stopped dancing in college and my posture has been on a horrid decline for the past 9 years. I have really be recognizing it lately, and I know that if I don't make a change soon it could mean very bad things for my spine later on.

Some times I find myself slouched in the strangest, most awful positions at work and I am like "why the heck an I sitting like this?!?!"

Yoga, stretching, etc will help increase strength but the hardest part is really just being mindful of it. I put up a little "no slouching!" sign on my computer at work to help remind me.

There is a workout video called Ballet Beautiful and it's like ballet/yoga for regular people... it killssss! But she teaches posture and breathing too. I'm going to start using it when I start working out again.

Thank you for all the suggestions everyone!

While my photographer and bridesmaids could give me reminders, I feel this may end up making me self conscious and look less natural in photos. Especially since I anticipate being nervous as is.

I have recently found that simply trying to be mindful of posture is not enough. When I try focusing on posture, as FutureMrsB mentioned, a few minutes later I will be like "Why the heck am I slouching again!?!?" It seems like a deeper issue. I will be working on strengthening my back muscles and core as a start. Based on all the responses I will definitely look into ballet/yoga/barre as well.

I will plan on providing an update once I find what works for me. Thanks for all the input everyone!

@Ashley trust me I understand! But as often as you can remember, do it! Even a little bit of change helps. I also make sure when I am binge-watching netflix that I have my back properly supported.

I feel you girl. I've always had bad posture and recently I saw a photo of myself with a group of girls and realized how awful I looked. So as hard as it's been, I just have to constantly remind myself to sit properly. It took me a few weeks to get in the habit of actually thinking about it, but I actually think it's starting to work.
