Pot roast

*~WiiFeY~*, on May 31, 2011 at 9:40 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 11

I've got in my head that I'm going to make a pot roast for dinner.. Its my favorite and I can't stop thinking about it lol But I want to try something different.

Usually it would involve carrots, potatoes, celery, Lipton onion soup mix, water, s&p, and of course the roast.. Its usually delicious but I want to try something new Smiley smile

What do you put in your pot roast? I'm going to do red skin potatoes instead of regular potatoes.. But that's not too daring lol Any ideas?

Ummm, I don't know of anything too innovative on the pot roast front. I've heard that when making pot roast we/you should not add water to it. Have you checked out foodnetwork.com?

My sister adds beer to hers. But we think FS might be allergic to beer (odd, I know) so I'm scared to try it Smiley smile

I love mushrooms so mine always has them. I too used the lipton soup mix with only 3/4 cup of water. I have had it other ways but this is definately the best. Sometimes I add onions, celery pretty much what ever just go to the grocery store and pick up what ever veggies look good I am sure it will be delicious!

Use spaghetti sauce and red wine and the veggies you mnetioned. The acid in the tomatoes makes the meat super tender!

Also here is my French Dip recipe

    1 roast 3-5 lbs

    1 beef boullion cubes

    5 peppercorns

    2 bay leaves

1 tsp each of dried thyme, rosemary, garlic powder

    1/2 cup soy sauce

    water

    6-8 French rolls

Put roast in slow cooker. Combine all other ingrediants and pour over roast. Add enough water to cover the roast. Cover and cook 8 hours on low. Remove roast from slow cooker, reserving broth. Shred meat and return to broth. Serve roast in rolls with reserved broth for dipping. Serves 6-8 people. * some of my family likes horserasdish sauce with theirs*

I love this with mashed potatoes and veggies on the side!

We have also added oregano, basil and rosemary to get an "Italian" flavor.

Also, Worchestershire sauce and/or red wine for more of a french flavor.

Try Catalina salad dressing, it adds awesome flavor in the slow cooker. It doesn't sound like it would be good, but anyone who has tasted it loved it. Use the biggest bottle you can find and I usually add 1/2 to 1 bottle of water to it. Also very good with the potatoes.

I know this is going to sound weird but my family has always added a can of cream of chicken soup and then sprinkles the lipton mix on top of that, it gives it a creamy sauce and it absolutely delicious! I do not add water to mine either. Smiley smile

I make mine using Beefy Onion Soup Mix (it's even better than the normal Lipton's mix)! I add 3/4 cup of red wine (merlot/sharaz), mushrooms, onions, carrots and potatoes. Another trick I learned was to sear the roast (with olive oil in a pan) prior to throwing it in the crock pot. Then I coat the roast in flour which helps to thicken the sauce and turns it into more of a gravy. Then I cook everything in the crock pot on low for 10 hours.

FH asks for pot roast quite often - he looooves this receipe. Smiley smile

I just did a roast in the crockpot today with a jar of rogan josh curry sauce (it's got a tomato base), a little extra salt and garlic, and a fair amount of white wine, all cooked for 8 hours on low. I haven't had it yet because I'm working late, but DS said it was delicious. He's PROBABLY not sucking up. :p
