Potted plants as centerpieces?

Kristi, on December 5, 2011 at 6:25 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

What are your thought on this idea? I thought it would be kinda cool. Maybe tape a "winning" ticket under 1 chair at each table & that person gets to keep it! I just can't see spending so much money on flowers that will die and I'm not really into fake flowers. Here's a pic of what I had in mind.

I think it's a fantastic idea! My cousin had planted gardenias ... they smelled so good and guests wanted to take them home, which was awesome b/c then they didn't have extra stuff to take home with them or trying to give the centeripieces away.

    Here were her centerpieces

I think if it's done small an dainty it could be nice.

I have done plotted plants for Eco-friendly weddings. Both as center pieces and as escort cards/favors (they were little mini ones).

I would say do not do a raffle them, just have the dj at the end of the night tell your guest that they can take the potted plants home because there are many guests who do not want potted plant.

You can go to a Eco-friendly florists and they should be able to help you or go to you local garden store. If you plan on DIYing it and growing them, I would only suggest it if you are already an avid grower and have your own little green house because it is hard and very expensive unless you already have the equipment you need.

In the end normally potted plants are not cheaper then flowers but if you do not like the idea of wasting money on things that will die in couple days it can be a good option. Keep a couple of the potted plants and you will be able to enjoy them years after and every time you look at them you will think about your wedding.

I have a bride who is doing an Asian theme for her October 2012 wedding. She is doing Bonsai Trees on all of the reception tables! I can't wait to see how it turns out. We are doing orchids for her bouquet.

I can't attach a picture on my iPad, but I've done potted (8") lavender plants. They weren't very full due to bad weather this season, so I supplemented them with some other greenery.

I've also done little pots of mixed herbs that was quite pretty.

Two other ideas: bowls of color coordinated fruit and small decorated cakes for each table.

I like the idea of bamboo. But I have to incorporate color somehow. Our tablecloths will be black. Maybe mini red roses!

Our colors are black, champagne & red. & I have a few little floating candle votives for each table. And I am going to have silver & gold hershy kisses sprinkled on the tables too. What do you think? I just don't want the tables to look scanty.

@Kristi- LOVE the Amaryllis idea however, they typically are only available to buy around Christmas. but the mini rose bush would be lovely too!

I think its a good idea. A friend of mine did this at her outdoor wedding and she allowed guests to take them. There wasn't one left behind!

I love the idea, and I like the "winning ticket" idea - if they don't want the plant, they will hand it to someone else at the table.

I think it's a great idea. I actually considered it too. Just don't like the flowers available during my wedding season.

Potted plants can make beautiful centerpieces. Have your florist find good quality plants and a nice container to put them in and they will look wonderful on your tables.

This would be really pretty, depending on how big the tables are (especially long rectangular tables) you could put enough on the table for each guest to take home, and they would double as gifts...

The biggest thing to consider is if you're growing them yourself or not. As mentioned, Amaryllis is usually only available around Christmas. If you are able to force the bulb to grow than you also have to consider timing of the blooms. Also, you would have to consider the possibility of getting pests like whitefly, powdery mildew etc.

If you're getting them from a florist though you should be good! I think potted plants are a great idea Smiley smile

Beautiful and thoughtful idea - I LOVE it. The mini-roses should be fairly easy to come by - I see them all the time in the stores or you can order them online. If you don't want to put them in containers, you can always wrap them in paper/fabric that matches your decor. Thanks for sharing!
