Pre-marital Course?

Chabely, on December 9, 2020 at 11:11 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 5

Hi!

I am looking through various pre-marital online courses and/or books and would like some feedback. Did any of you do the "Happily Ever After" course my Marriage365? My fiancé and I are both Christian but we recently moved so we have not found a church yet so the idea of having a minister do some counseling is not reachable for now. The happily every after course is around $100 and not sure if we absolutely need to pay that much. I think we will benefit from a course to discuss things and what not since neither of us have been married before. Anyone suggestions on books/courses?

Thanks! Smiley smile

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by John Gottman, PhD is a good marriage book/workbook. It's by a psychology researcher who specializes in couple's research. There's a few more good ones people have recommended that I can't remember right now. Hopefully people comment but you can also do a search on here if not.

I would recommend finding a licensed couples counselor for best results.

You can find many through your county, health insurance, or even local Catholic Charities. Quite a few, I imagine, would also be religiously sensitive.

Having a third party, professionally trained, is best for guiding hard conversations.

We did premarital counseling with a therapist in our city.

In addition to premarital counseling, the book "The 5 Love Languages" was helpful for me and my fiance. I suggest reading each chapter separately from your fiance and then discussing together. This book wouldn't replace marriage counseling, but would be good to do along with it.
