Pre-recorded Music for reception?

Adele, on January 23, 2013 at 11:06 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

I'm on a very tight budget and cannot afford a band/dj, so we're planning on using an mp3 player with prerecorded dance music. Any suggestions? Do you know if there are CDs that we could probably purchase that have a good mix of fast & slow song choices? I don't particularly care for rap music and our guests age ranges from late 20s to mid 60s. (I'd say most are mid-age.)

Now, I'm a bit lame when it comes to all this new stuff people do with music.

BUT...can't you create a playlist with all the music you and FH like? Then stick that bad boy in and play. Smiley smile

I beleive there is a way to download music by using something called "you tube converter" that way it doesn't cost to get the songs you like.

    hope I didn't confuse you more. : )

My Fiance and i use something called any video converter, you type the link of a song from youtube it in and it turns the video into just the music, it works great! We are also not having a band or DJ at ours since its going to be so small and at a house we dont see the need for it. We have the iphone app My WeddingDJ got amazing reviews and can't wait to use it Smiley smile

Great suggestions! We have iPhones too... so I'll test out the iphone app as well as maybe just downloading them to itunes etc. We'll see which works best/easiest. Thanks!

I have an MP3 player that I will be using, just taking any downloaded music & putting it in playlists.

I-phones/pods have I-tunes, that's how you make playlists on there.

I would say have cds made anyway, as backup. B/c of not using a DJ, you need to have that extra backup in case the cd skips, or the mp3 battery dies...

I can't help you with particular genres to use tho, I'm stuck there too. I want to play "club" music but we have country people. older parents, so I'm still trying to figure out how to make good playlists

Also, with doing DIY music, make sure whatever stereo system/speakers you use are good quality, try them out beforehand, at different levels, base, etc. You dont want your music to sound terrible b/c the sound system wasnt great.

I've already tried out my own *kick ass* stereo, sounds like a club with base booming. It just so happens that our venue has a new version of my stereo, with better speakers hooks up & microphone. So we are all set for DIY music & announcements.

I would also suggest putting someone (you trust & who doesnt screw around) in charge of the playlists/announcements. Dont let anyone else mess with it, you dont want drunk guests thinking it's cool to change the playlists

Thanks Masquerade Bride (love that name)! I will definitely have back-up plan. That would be awful if my mp3 player dies or if a CD skips... lol. My kids are pretty tech-savvy... so I'll leave all the techie stuff to them.. but will guide them on music choices. Good luck with your's as well Smiley smile

Very interesting discussion. I was just having this conversation with my honorary MOH today.

I'm not sure I should have a Dj. It's an afternoon wedding (ceremony 11:30) ending at 4pm with full cocktails and lunch for 40 people.

I hear the my wedding DJ app is good. But I haven't had a chance to try it out.

Go to a music store or a best buy. they have "party" selections, like best of the 80's, 90's dance music, etc.

The iPhone playlist is a great idea. Make sure you check your local bylaws because here in Ontario you have to pay for a SOCAN fee allowing you to play copywritten music at a function. I would hate to have you having a great time and then getting fined on your big day. You can also ask your venue if any fees apply for something like this.
