Pre-wedding weight loss?

Amber, on August 11, 2019 at 11:08 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 1 12
So I’m sure I’m far from the first bride-to-be looking to shed the extra poundage before the big day. I’m also probably not the first woman who feels like weight loss has always been a vicious cycle of losing the drive after a lack of results, but I REALLY want this to be the one time I stick with it. I want to feel absolutely beautiful on my wedding day, rather than picking myself apart like every other day. I generally eat pretty healthy, but I’ve always been horrible with holding myself accountable because I’ve always hated exercising. Has anyone found anything specifically geared towards wedding weight loss motivation that’s helped keep you on track?

This isn't specifically wedding weight loss but I joined WW and started following IF to help with weight loss and it's been great. It's much more sustainable than one would think.

I make it a point to work out once a week with my FH because we both want to lose. It can be something as mundane as taking a walk or typical like going to the gym. Our favorite has been fake sword fighting (he still has the foam swords from childhood). It may sound silly, but it’s a great work out

I’ve always found it difficult to maintain my motivation long term, so what’s been key for me is finding something I enjoy. That way it’s not something I’m just making myself do because I know I should. As a teen I took a “yolates” class that was a combination obviously of yoga and Pilates and I loved it, so I started doing that again. I also find it relaxing to go for walks and hikes, it’s just difficult sometimes with two kids, but I try to get out as much as I can and just put in headphones and focus on releasing everything that’s stressing me and just go. I have a friend who ADORES barre classes, and one who does spinning and kick boxing. Both want me to join them, gym memberships and classes just aren’t really in our budget right now and walking outside is free. I know some people who have used HealthyWage as motivation too, you bet an amount you choose to loose an amount of weight you determine and if you win you get your money back and then some. I had a friend who bet $300 she’d loose 60lbs in 6 months and won $1100 (her $300 back + $800).

You definitely gotta find a workout regimen you enjoy ! I hate working out aha but I started finding classes or trying out different workouts til I found what I liked best and stuck to it. I also prefer fitness classes because they definitely hold me accountable once I'm in them.

There is a free app called fit on that is super great with accountability for me. I love It because it has a ton of different work outs you can do on demand so you can change it up every day if you need to. It works for me because the only workout I will do daily without issues is bike riding but anything else I get bored with it and do not stick to it. The on demand part keeps it fun. And it’s free! Bonus!!

People say logging your food and excercise in My Fitness Pal helps with accountability. It pushes reminders to you to do it, but after ignoring those, it eventually stops 😂

Anyway, I hit the wrong button, sorry. When I was good with it, I learned that I wasn't drinking nearly enough water, which helps you feel fuller longer and helps with digestion. It also helps with skin and feeling alert. Also, I knew stuff had a lot of hidden sugar in it (pasta sauce for example) but I didn't realize how much. Because you have to enter a portion for everything it got me measuring my food more and I realized that while I wasn't eating candy and drinking soda, I was eating a whole grilled chicken breast and a whole russet potato, with veggies of course. But the point is that I was eating too much "healthy food" or food that I could switch out, like a sweet potato or whole grain pasta. I also linked map my walk to it. I thought I was walking a mile in 25 minutes but it was really 7/10 in 18 minutes. Not exactly enough. Also consider if you have health stuff going on. I have Crohn's disease, so I absolutely cannot eat broccoli or cabbage pickles in s slaw or otherwise. Salad is also an unwise choice. You have to find what works for you. The struggle is real!

Hey there. I’m totally with you. I’m getting married next fall and would love to be down about 20 more pounds on top of the 25 I’ve already lost. Just wanted to point out that adding a couple workouts throughout the week is definitely a great start to tone up, but don’t rely on just workouts to lose weight. It’s really like 90% diet, 10% exercise. The fact you eat a healthy diet is wonderful and maybe all you’d need to do is just watch your portions. I’ve been using the Noom app and have had really great results with it. You log your meals on it, it tracks your steps, and it offers solid tips and important info regarding the psychology behind weight loss and maintaining the ideal weight. I would highly recommend it especially if you struggle with your weight or yo-yo a lot like I do. You usually can get 2 weeks for a few dollars to try it out, then it’s a subscription of (I think) $125 for 4 months. For me, by the end of the 4 months I should be at my goal weight and can decide if it’s worth it for me to keep the subscription any longer. You can definitely find free apps such as myplate and my fitness pal on the App Store that let you track your meals and exercise as well. Whatever you decide to do, good luck!

I lost 15 lbs before our wedding (over the course of 6 months). I took HIIT classes twice a week (high intensity interval training) at two different gyms. The other 3 weekdays I used the Tone It Up app to do workouts at home. I walked our dog at least 3 miles every weekend. Then I cut out soda, coffee creamer, and desserts (I had dessert on the weekend, just not during the week).

I think the best way to keep weight off is by making exercise a big part of your life. You said you hate exercising (and a lot of people do). I'd try out different workouts to see if you can find something you hate a little less. Try yoga, pilates, cycling, barre, etc. classes in your area. Maybe do Class Pass if it's a thing where you live, maybe try Orange Theory. Or just put on a TV show and spend 30 minutes or so on an elliptical/treadmill/bike.

And then other than that, start monitoring your portions like people mentioned above! Maybe you're eating healthy but you're consuming more calories than your body actually needs.

I'm not doing this specifically for my wedding but, FH and I have been working towards being more healthy in general. We have been using the MyFitnessPal App. It lets you log your calories for each day and sets a goal you need to meet for weight loss. Once you get used to logging everything it's much easier to see where you are going wrong with your eating habits. We also do a 30 min workout or walk 2 miles (started at 1) each day (alternating days). Logging my calories helps me be more accountable, and also makes me WANT to do the work out (if you burn more you can eat more...) We also meal prep each Sunday. We have been doing it for 4 weeks as of today and I've lost 3 lbs.

Long story short - there isn't a long term "short cut" you have to make the decision to make the changes and go for it. Less calories in = weight loss. It will definitely help if you and FH do it together. We keep each other motivated when we feel like giving up.

Something that's always worked for me is setting reminders on my phone to keep me on track throughout the day. I'll use some of these motivational quotes and seeing them pop up especially before lunch and dinner helps keep me determined to reach my goals: https://www.openfit.com/20-motivational-quotes-to-help-you-reach-your-fitness-goals

"You're only one workout away from a good mood," is one of my favorite ones. I actually have that set to go off after I get out of work which is when I need to destress and go to the gym.
